Course details

<p>Are you looking for a job, want to start new studies, or would like to be more confident to help your children or grandchildren at school? If so, then improving your English skills is a great place to start. We have English classes at all levels to suit people of all abilities, interests, and ambitions.   </p>

<p> On our English courses you will get the opportunity to:  </p>

<ul>
<li>develop confidence and good communication skills for everyday life and work</li>
<li>learn to read and write or improve your reading and writing skills </li>
<li>improve your spelling, grammar, and punctuation </li>
<li>gain a nationally recognised qualification in English that will help you work towards further qualifications or go to university </li>
<li>improve your job prospects</li>
<li>breakdown literacy barriers to improve life in local communities</li>
</ul>

<p>  The good news is that you will not have to pay for your English course if you don’t yet have a GCSE grade 9-4 (A*- C) in this subject. You won’t have to pay exam and assessment fees either. </p>

<p> If English is not your first language, you will need to achieve a full Level 1 in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL), or equivalent, before joining an English course.  Please see information about our ESOL courses.</p>

Course requirements

<p>We welcome everyone, whether you need to learn the basics of reading and writing or want to develop your skills to get a GCSE.</p>

<p>We will invite you to come to our city centre site to meet us and complete a Starting Points activity so that we can check which level you need to join. Or look out for one of our taster sessions where you can come and have a go.</p>

How will I learn?

<p>Most sessions will be delivered face-to-face.</p>

<p>In class you will read interesting texts relating to everyday life and work, and learn to write well. You will work on writing effectively, for example, messages, emails, reports, or blogs, depending on which level you join. You will also join in classroom discussions and learn to make a good presentation.</p>

<p>In addition, there may be online sessions where you will learn to use Microsoft Teams.</p>

<p>Learning Support is available if you have a learning disability, let us know on your application if you require support.</p>

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

<p>Assessment takes place throughout your studies.</p>

<p>Your teacher will give you feedback to help you improve. You will also learn to check through your own work carefully to spot mistakes. There will be quizzes and short tests during your course.</p>

<p>Regular monitoring of progress will help to identify any support you might need.</p>

<p>Before taking exams, you will have mock exams to make sure you are well prepared. There will be a reading, writing and speaking and listening exam at the end of your course.</p>

<p>To achieve this qualification, you will need to attend all the sessions punctually and complete homework tasks.</p>

Are there any additional costs?

<p>For all students, the course is free if you do not already hold an English GCSE grade 4-9.</p>

<p>You will need to supply your own writing materials such as pens, paper, and folders but you may be able to loan a laptop and a MiFi to enable you to learn at home.</p>

What qualification will I get?

<p>On successful completion and achievement of the exams, you will be awarded a Functional Skills English qualification at the appropriate level or a GCSE.</p>

What will I be able to do after this course?

<p>You may want to progress to the next level in English. You may also wish to progress to other studies. If you have completed either Level 2 or GCSE, this will help you get a job or a better job. It will also enable you to go on to higher studies.</p>
