Course details

<p>Do you want to be an individual by creating your own garments from scratch or be able to recycle old clothes? </p>

<p>Would you like to be self-employed or work in the creative industries? </p>

<p>We offer a range of courses from Entry Level to Level 2 that will help you reach your goal.  </p>

<p><strong>Sewing and Textiles - an introduction </strong>- Develop your creative passion with this short beginner’s sewing and textiles course. It will provide you with the skills to explore fashion and textile design ideas to make simple garments, accessories or home interior items. You will be able to learn how to use a sewing machine and its accessories.  </p>

<p>On your first session you will need to bring dressing pins, a pin cushion, sewing needles, cotton thread (any colour), half a metre of medium weight cotton fabric. </p>

<p><strong>Sewing and Textiles Level 1 </strong> is a year-long course that will provide you with the opportunity to explore design skills to make simple garments, accessories and home interior items in more detail.  You will be able to learn more about using the sewing machine and you will learn about the elements of design including use of colour, line and texture.   </p>

<p>On your first session you will need to bring dressing pins, a pin cushion, sewing needles, cotton thread (any colour), half a metre of a medium weight cotton fabric. </p>

<p><strong>Sewing and Textiles Level 2</strong> will provide you with the opportunity to explore design skills to make more complex garments, accessories and home interior items.  You will be able to learn more about using the sewing machine and you will learn about the elements of design including use of colour, line and texture.  You will also have the opportunity to explore opportunities for employment and self-employment. </p>

<p>On your first session you will need to bring a small storage sewing box, a tape measure, dressing pins, a pin cushion, two metres of a medium weight cotton fabric, cotton thread (any colour), a foot long (12inch) ruler, a pencil, eraser and tailors chalk.  </p>

Course requirements

<p>Entry to these courses starts with an informal meeting with your teacher. For the Entry 3 and Level 1 courses you need to be working at a minimum of Entry 3 English. For the Level 2 course you need to be working at Level 1 or above for English.   </p>

<p>There will be an opportunity to join a separate English and/or maths skills class if you do not already have a Level 2 qualification in these subjects.  </p>

<p>You will need 100% attendance throughout the course to successfully achieve. </p>

<li>You will be given a FREE Microsoft Office 365 account including access to Word, Excel and PowerPoint</li>

How will I learn?

<p>Most sessions will be delivered face-to-face. There will be planned lessons, discussions, group activities,  research, tutorials, and demonstrations followed by practical activities giving you the best experience and prepare you in the best way for a move onto the next level of course or into employment. In addition there may be online sessions where you will learn to use Microsoft Teams.  Up to 25% of your course will be independent learning that will involve you carrying out activities outside of the classroom.</p>

<p>Learning support is available if you have a learning disability, let us know on your application if you require support.</p>

How will my progress be monitored and assessed?

<p>Assessment takes place throughout your study in the form of written assignments and the production of a range of items. Your teacher will negotiate assessment plans with you on a regular basis and will give you feedback on how well you are doing.</p>

<p>You will have an Individual Learning Plan which will be used to record your targets and progress. There are no examinations; you will put together a portfolio of evidence that will be assessed by your teacher and moderated externally.</p>

Are there any additional costs?

<p>For many students the course will be free. Student services will check your eligibility for funding. </p>

<p>You will need to supply your own writing materials such as pens, paper and folders and you will need to provide textile resources including fabric and thread and have access to a sewing kit, your teacher will advise you in your first session. If you do not have a computer or laptop but need to use one for your learning you may be able to loan a laptop and a MiFi dongle to enable you to learn at home.</p>

What qualification will I get?

<p>On successful achievment of your course you will be awarded one of the following:</p>

<p>NCFE Entry Level Award in Creative Craft</p>

<p>NCFE Level 1 Award in Creative Craft</p>

<p>NCFE Level 2 Certificate in Creative Craft</p>

What will I be able to do after this course?

<ul>
<li>Progression to the next level creative craft course.</li>
<li>You may wish to broaden your skills in other areas such as English, maths or digital skills.</li>
</ul>

<p>Successful achievement of the course may lead to a variety of employment opportunities including:</p>

<ul>
<li>Self-employed designer/garment maker (£ variable)</li>
<li>Sewing machinist (£23,000 to £27,000)</li>
<li>Costume designer (£25,000 to £45,000) – following completion of a degree course</li>
<li>Fashion Designer (£24,000 to £40,000) – following completion of a degree course</li>
