What the course is about

<p><strong>Please note, all the information below regards Level 2 Certificate in Barbering. This is a waiting list for the next available course which begins in September 2024 however, we will begin the application process early in the spring. Please read the information below and apply to join the waiting list in readiness for spring 2024.</strong></p>

<p><u>The course</u></p>

<p>This is a vocational qualification that has been designed to develop a limited number of barbering skills to a high level of occupational ability and will prepare you to enter the men’s hairdressing sector. This qualification will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills to enable you to advise and consult men on the type of haircut and facial hair shaping they would like and whether this is suitable for them. You will also learn how to work in a safe manner throughout the service, protecting both yourself and your clients.</p>

<p>With the other learners in your class, you will cover the following 4 mandatory units:</p>

<ul>
<li>Client consultation for hair services</li>
<li>Follow health and safety practice in the salon</li>
<li>Cut men’s hair</li>
<li>Cut men’s facial hair</li>
</ul>

<p> A variety of learning activities will be used on this course, including tutor presentation and demonstration, practical application of skills, individual and group work, discussions, Q&A, internet research, individual research and project work. Where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work. There may be vocational specialist guest speakers, or employers, invited to share their skills and experience.</p>

<p>Regular home study will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills. You will initially develop practical skills by working on other learners in your class until you have developed enough skill to offer treatments to clients. There may be the opportunity to undertake a work placement during your course. Full details will be shared at induction.</p>

<p>Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject.</p>

<p>If you have declared at enrolment that you are unemployed, you may be invited to meet with an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer or employability member of staff, to identify other learning opportunities that will support you to secure employment or improve your employment prospects. We highly recommend that you engage fully in any other learning opportunities that we help you identify.</p>

<p>This is a course leading to a qualification, and the cost of it is subsidised by public funding. You will be required to complete all of the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines.</p>

<p><strong>Please note: if you do not successfully complete the course within this academic year, you will not be able to repeat it at the subsidised fee.</strong></p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>You will be required to attend an Admission Session prior to enrolling on this course. At this session, you will receive:</p>

<li>Information as to the pre-requisite skills or qualifications needed prior to enrolling</li>
<li>Information as to the home study requirements and commitment</li>
<li>A skills check for English/or maths as appropriate</li>
<li>Details of learning or financial support that may be available to you</li>

<p>There will be an opportunity to ask any further questions you may have. If you have any certificates for qualifications in this subject area, or for English or maths, please bring them with you to the Admission Session.</p>

<p>Please note - places on some of our courses will be in high demand and if you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately, as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner (see Additional Information below). Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>This is a Level 2 assessed course. Once completed, your work will be marked and internally verified. An external verifier from the awarding body will visit to review your work before you receive your certificate. As soon as your certificate is received by Skills&Learning it will be forwarded to you.</p>

<p><strong>Awarding body:</strong> VTCT</p>

<p><strong>Assignments/Course work:</strong> Your practical skills will be formally assessed throughout the course. You will collect a portfolio of evidence i.e. assignments and written test results, plus other forms of evidence, for example, witness testimonies and photographic evidence.</p>

<p><strong>Examination(s):</strong> There is no final written exam, but you will complete online tests on each topic as you progress throughout the course.</p>

<p>You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals.</p>

<p><strong>Please note that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set. It may be possible to re-sit the examination within the academic year at an additional fee.</strong></p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>We have designed this course to support you with working in the hairdressing/barbering sector. Successful completion of this course will provide skills and knowledge required for job roles in hairdressing/barbering.</p>

<p>Some experience of hairdressing/barbering is required, you may find it useful to have completed a Level 1 course in an Introduction to Barbering or have some experience of the subject. You can check the suitability of this course for a preferred career path or route to employment by looking at various job profiles on the National Careers Service website <a href="https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk/">https://nationalcareers.service.gov.uk</a></p>

<p>English language and /or maths skills at Level 1/Level 2 are required. You may be asked to complete an online assessment in English (and maths if applicable) prior to submitting a course application or as part of an admission session.</p>

<p>There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the period of time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required, and intend to sit the examination if applicable. Materials and costs

<p>A kit containing all essential items will be provided for you whilst on the course, in order for you to be able to practise outside the classroom at no extra cost.</p>

<p>A tunic will be also be provided for you to wear to your sessions.</p>

<p><strong>Please note:</strong> these items are on loan to you and <strong>MUST BE RETURNED</strong> at the end of the course. If it is not returned you will be invoiced for the full cost of a replacement.</p>

<p>You will need to wear comfortable enclosed low-heeled shoes and black trousers.</p>

<p><strong>Please note</strong> - you will not be able to undertake an assessment if not dressed appropriately.</p>

<p>There may be a requirement to obtain course books or other resources to support your study. You will be guided by your tutor prior to any purchase.</p>
