What the course is about

<p>Under the guidance of our specialist teacher, you will be able to begin your journey into ceramics and pottery work. </p>

<p>Working with clay is great fun, allowing you to make something tangible and focus your mind in the present. The benefits include making wonderful pottery items to take away, developing hand coordination, relaxing and meeting new people in a safe environment. </p>

<p>During the course you can explore a range of making and decorating techniques, which may include: </p>

<ul>
<li>Understanding and using equipment safely </li>
<li>Coil pots </li>
<li>Slab building </li>
<li>Different types of decoration; slip, oxides, glazes, and underglazes </li>
</ul>

<p>Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community.</p>

<p>Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. </p>

<p>Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience. </p>

<p>This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course. </p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>There are no Pre-course admission sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. </p>

<p>This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning disability </p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. </p>

<p>There is no qualification or examination attached to this course. </p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This course is specifically designed for adults who have a mild to moderate learning disability and may be particularly helpful to those who are working towards gaining independent living skills or when a qualification course is not the right option. </p>

<p>You will need to consider the level of support you may need during the sessions as the course will have one tutor and may have one learning support assistant. This means that one-to-one support may be limited to ensure that everyone gets the help they need. However, we do provide a limited number of spaces so that your carer or support worker can also attend the course with you, should you require. Please inform us when enrolling if you intend to bring your own support so we can accommodate them. </p>

<p>You do not need any previous experience in the subject but should have an interest in your own potential and what life has to offer. You will need to be prepared to take an active part in the sessions and to work in a group setting. </p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder. </p>

<p>The price of the course includes all materials, glazes, tools and firings. </p>

<p>You are advised to wear old clothes or an overall to protect your clothes. Long hair should be tied back and no open toed shoes to be worn. </p>

<strong>Places on courses:</strong> many of our courses are in high demand. <strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.<br />
<strong>Home study:</strong> you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />
<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
