What the course is about

<p>This is a qualification which provides the underpinning knowledge and understanding, for those with a role in directly working with children or young people in schools. It will also provide the opportunity to evidence further competence within the role of supporting learning activities within a school. This course is completed by working one to one with your assessor who will meet with you regularly in school to review your progress and set learning goals. Your assessor will also observe you supporting in the classroom and provide you with feedback. It is necessary to have completed level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course prior to applying for this Level 3 course. Under the guidance of your Assessor Trainer you will cover the following units:</p>

<li>Communication and professional relationships with children, young people and adults</li>
<li>Schools as Organisations</li>
<li>Support children and young people&#039;s health and safety</li>
<li>Engage in personal development in health, social care or children&#039;s and young people&#039;s settings</li>
<li>Support learning activities</li>
<li>Promote children and young people&#039;s positive behaviour</li>
<li>Develop professional relationships with children, young people and adults</li>
<li>Promote equality, diversity and inclusion in work with children and young people</li>
<li>Support assessment for learning</li>
</ul>

<p>Regular home study of 6 -12 hours per week will be necessary to successfully complete this course. You will be supported to develop good study skills by Skills and Learning and your assessor, who will support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This will include assessing your current skills and planning learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas. To support this, you will undertake some e-learning modules, where appropriate, as homework. If you have declared at enrolment that you are unemployed, you may be invited to meet with an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer or employability member of staff, to identify other learning opportunities that will support you to secure employment or improve your employment prospects. We highly recommend that you engage fully in any other learning opportunities that we help you identify. You will be required to complete all of the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines. Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>This is a Level 3 assessed course. Once completed, your work will be marked and internally verified. An external verifier from the awarding body will visit to review your work before you receive your certificate. As soon as your certificate is received by Skills & Learning it will be forwarded to you.</p>

<p><strong>Awarding body:</strong> City & Guilds<br />
<strong>Assignments/Course work:</strong> You will build a portfolio of evidence which may include observations, oral and written questions, case studies, witness statements and photographic evidence.<br />
<strong>Examination(s):</strong> None</p>

<p>Your tutor will need to arrange to visit you in your placement to carry out a minimum of 3 observations of you working with the children. It is not always possible to do these in your normal placement time slot, so you may need to arrange with the school to support in additional sessions for this, or in sessions on alternative days. You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals.</p>

<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set. It may be possible to re-sit the examination within the academic year at an additional fee.</strong></p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>We have designed this course to support you with working in the Education and Training sector. Successful completion of this course will provide skills and knowledge required for job roles in education and training as a teaching assistant supporting in a classroom in a primary or secondary school. This course is suitable for those already working as learning support staff in schools, or those with voluntary placements.</p>

<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:</strong> A placement in a school of a <strong>minimum</strong> of 15 hours per week will be required. This will need to be arranged with the school prior to enrolling on the course. This can be in any year group from reception upwards in a primary or secondary school. A placement in a nursery or sixth form college is <strong>not</strong> suitable for this course. The school will need to arrange a DBS check for you and may pass on the cost of this to you.</p>

<p>This course is suitable for those who have already completed level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. It may also be suitable for those in a paid position as a teaching assistant or with considerable experience supporting in the classroom. <p>If you have completed your Level 2 Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools course with Skills & Learning, a recommendation from your tutor will be required to confirm your suitability to progress to the Level 3 course. If you completed your course with another training provider, you will need to provide a copy of your certificate and a reference from your course tutor. You will also need to attend an interview with Skills & Learning and will be contacted to arrange a day and time for this following receipt of your application.</p>

<p>There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the period of time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required, and intend to sit the examination if applicable. You may be asked to complete an online assessment in English prior to submitting a course application or as part of an enrolment session.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need to bring to each session, pen and paper, plus a folder for your notes. You will also need an A4 lever arch file and a set of dividers to present your work in. It is not necessary to purchase a text book as all notes and handouts required will be supplied by your tutor. However, there is a book that complements the content of this course that you may purchase if you wish. Your tutor or assessor will provide details at the start of the course, so please do not make any purchases prior to this. There may be further materials you could obtain to further support your study. You will be guided by your tutor prior to any purchase.</p>
