What the course is about

<p>This interesting online course will give you the chance to see if the GCSE course is suitable for you and give us the chance to assess your readiness to attend and achieve your GCSE at this time.</p>

<p>Some of the activities you will do include:</p>

<p>Discuss your current skills and ability levels</p>

<p>Take part in GCSE level learning activities including discussions</p>

<p>A discussion to identify your learning goals and identify any learning needs or preferences you may have</p>

<p>Be given support with choosing the right course for you</p>

<p>Understand what the course is about and answer any questions you may have about your learning</p>

<p>Complete a BKSB diagnostic assessment to assess what level you are working at and what key areas you might need to work on</p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>GCSE courses are for adults over the age of 19 who have not already achieved a GCSE English grades A*- C (9-4).</p>

<p>You will need to submit an application form online.</p>

<p>To attend this course you require good ICT skills and access to a laptop or computer with a camera and microphone.</p>

<p>You will receive confirmation that we have received your application. </p>

<p>Acceptance on the GCSE Intro course does not mean you will be offered a place on the main GCSE programme. GCSE is a rewarding but intense programme and you will be assessed during the session. If GCSE is not right for you at this time, an alternative course will be suggested.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>Your current ability levels will be checked through completing a range of assessment activities and you will be told if you have been successfully assessed to enrol on the main GCSE course or if further study or completion of a Functional Skills Qualification will be necessary before studying a GCSE with us.</p>

<p>At Skills & Learning we use the national Basic Key Skills Builder (BKSB) to assess a prospective learner&#039;s knowledge and skills and identify at which levels a learner is working so that we can enrol them onto the correct courses. BKSB is a market-leading, Functional Skills assessment software package.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This Introduction & Admission session is for <strong>new learners</strong> who wish to join one of our GCSE courses.</p>

<p>A good, basic level of knowledge in the main subject is required at Level 1.6 or above.</p>

<p>Please note that applications can only be considered from residents living in Dorset and neighbouring counties of Devon, Hampshire, Somerset and Wiltshire.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You should bring A4 paper, a folder, pens and pencils.</p>

<p>It will benefit your progress if you have regular and reliable access to a computer and the internet.</p>

<strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.<br />
<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />
<strong>Qualification Levels:</strong> there is further information about qualification levels on our website.<br />
<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
