What the course is about

<p>With the other learners in your class, you will cover the following units:</p>

<p>Understanding mental health</p>

<ul>
<li>Understanding stress</li>
<li>Understanding anxiety</li>
<li>Understanding phobias</li>
<li>Understanding depression</li>
<li>Understanding post-natal depression</li>
<li>Understanding bipolar disorder</li>
<li>Understanding schizophrenia</li>
<li>Understanding dementia</li>
<li>Understanding eating disorders</li>
<li>Understanding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder</li>
<li>Understanding obsessive compulsive disorder</li>
<li>Understanding post-traumatic stress disorder</li>
</ul>

<p>In each of the above, learners will gain an understanding of the specific mental health topic.</p>

<p>They will develop an understanding of the topic in relation to the symptoms and experience for the individual, support needs, how the disorder can be managed and treated, and the roles and needs of family and friends of the individual.</p>

<p>Your tutor will also support you to improve your English and maths skills alongside your learning of your vocational subject. This will include assessing your current skills from the work you produce and providing additional learning activities related to your subject that are designed to develop your skills in these areas.</p>

<p>If you have declared at enrolment that you are unemployed, you may be invited to meet with an Information, Advice and Guidance Officer or employability member of staff, to identify other learning opportunities that will support you to secure employment or improve your employment prospects. We highly recommend that you engage fully in any other learning opportunities that we help you identify.</p>

<p>This is a vocational course leading to a qualification, and the cost of it is subsidised by public funding. You will be required to complete all the necessary coursework/assignments or exams by the given deadlines.</p>

<p><strong>PLEASE NOTE:if you do not successfully complete the course within this academic year, you will not be able to repeat it at the subsidised fee.</strong></p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>This is a Level 2 assessed course. Once completed, your work will be marked and internally verified. An external verifier from the awarding body will visit to review your work before you receive your certificate. As soon as your certificate is received by Skills & Learning it will be forwarded to you.</p>

<strong>Assignments/Course work:</strong> written work makes up a completed portfolio covering all the units<br />
<strong>Examination(s):</strong> none</p>

<p>You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals.</p>

<p>Please note that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set. It may be possible to re-sit the examination within the academic year at an additional fee.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>It is not necessary to have formally studied Mental Health awareness prior to enrolling on this course, although you may have done an introductory course or have some experience of this subject.</p>

<p>This is blended learning course where you will attend weekly sessions in a classroom and complete assignments on each topic. You will need good IT skills and access to a computer, laptop or tablet with regular and reliable internet connection. This can be at home, work or a library.</p>

<p>There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the period of time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required. English language skills at Level 1/Level 2 are required. You will be asked to complete an online assessment in English after submitting a course application.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>All online (if required) and paper learning materials will be provided for this course.</p>

<p>A file, paper and pen will be required for your notes and coursework.</p>

<p>You will need access to a PC, laptop, notebook or tablet with broadband/wi-fi.</p>
