What the course is about
<p>In your class you will:</p>
<ul>
<li>Work on your reading skills, including reading for meaning, proof-reading and comprehension</li>
<li>Work on your writing skills, including planning your writing, writing for different purposes, spelling, grammar and punctuation</li>
<li>Work on your communication skills including speaking and listening activities and assessments</li>
<li>Complete work in the classroom and as homework to prepare you for the Functional Skills assessment.</li>
</ul>
<p><strong>This is a course leading to a qualification.</strong>This course is paid for by public funding and you will be required to complete a recognised City & Guilds English assessment. We will also, where appropriate, help you to improve other skills such as maths, ICT, and skills needed for employability.</p>

<p>You will be required to participate in an Admission Session to attend this course. Many courses start in September, but we enrol learners at set times throughout the year. Assessment of progress, tests, exams
<p>This is a City & Guilds Level 1 and Level 2 examination course. You will be required to complete assessments in some or all of these subjects:</p>
<ul>
<li>Reading</li>
<li>Writing</li>
<li>Speaking and Listening</li>
</ul>
<p>You will work towards an exam or portfolio. Once completed your work will be marked internally or externally and quality assured. If successful you will receive a nationally recognised certificate. Personal goals for you to work on in class will be agreed with your tutor and these will be reviewed regularly.</p>
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
<p>This course is for you if:</p>
<ul>
<li>You want to gain an English qualification at the right level for you.</li>
<li>You want to attend a small, friendly class and work at your own pace and level</li>
<li>You want to improve your communication, reading and writing skills for employment and/or personal reasons</li>
<li>You are able to attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions</li>
</ul>
<p>You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in English to attend this course. You are confident with your IT skills and have access to a laptop or tablet. The use of a printer would also be desirable but not essential. <strong>IMPORTANT - On this course it is essential that you attend regularly and complete any homework given. Materials and costs
<p>You will need an A4 folder, A4 lined paper and pens. <strong>The course is Government funded so there is no cost for the course. PLEASE NOTE - If you fail to turn up for an exam you will be charged an exam fee of £30.</strong></p>
Next Step
<p>When you have completed a qualification you may be able to progress to the next level. When you have completed a Level 2 English Functional Skills qualification you may choose to do a GCSE in English. Once you have improved your English skills you may like to consider a maths or ICT qualification. Other courses may be offered by Skills & Learning or other local providers. <strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. <strong>Home study:</strong> you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
