What the course is about

<p>This course builds on the content and skills in the Entry Level course. The areas covered are (1) enable learners to gain confidence and fluency in their use of digital knowledge and skills, and develop a positive attitude towards the use of digital skills; (2) enable learners to develop an appreciation of the importance of digital skills in the workplace and in life generally; (3) enable learners to demonstrate their knowledge and skills by applying these to complete tasks and activities; and (4) provide a basis for further study, work and life.</p>

<p>Details of this course: </p>

<ol>
<li>Using devices and handling information
<ul>
<li>Search the internet and know what sponsored results mean</li>
<li>Use a hierarchical folder structure to organise files and use an appropriate file naming.</li>
<li>Save a file on cloud storage using one device and open it on another device.</li>
<li>Know and be able to appropriately use terminology (including bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes) describing data storage requirements.</li>
<li>Understand file compression</li>
<li>Resolve issues e.g. reinstall an application, change Wi-Fi settings, change a system or software setting</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Creating and editing
<ul>
<li>Be able to manipulate word-processed documents </li>
<li>Edit an image including caption, crop, resize, change contrast etc</li>
<li>Use simple formulae including sum, subtraction, multiplication, division, maximum, minimum, average</li>
<li>Format numeric data (including font sizes, font styles, alignment, cell formatting, merging cells, splitting cells, row height, column width).</li>
<li>Draw charts and label them including chart title, axis titles, data legends and data label</li>
</ul>

<li>Communicating
<ul>
<li>Send e-mails</li>
<li>Make video calls</li>
<li>Understand how you create a digital footprint</li>
</ul>

<li>Transacting
<ul>
<li>Manage account settings for an online service (including personal details, login credentials, marketing and communication preferences)</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Being safe and responsible online
<ul>
<li>Understand key rights under data protection laws</li>
<li>Know how to protect personal info e.g. restricting location services on a mobile GPS location Know how to backup files to the cloud.</li>
<li>Know how to avoid exposure to malware (including worms, trojans and ransomware).</li>
</ul>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>There are no formal entry requirements but many learners will have previously completed the Entry Level 3 course or have some previous IT experience.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>The course will have an externally set and marked onscreen / online assessment which will be available on demand. The assessments will be pass / fail in line with the other Functional Skills qualifications.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This is a follow on course which builds on the skills in the entry level course suitable for those with limited experience of digital devices.</p>

<p>Key questions for potential learners to consider might be: </p>

<ol>
<li>Have you done a previous course with Skills and Learning? Learners should normally have completed our Digital Functional Skills Entry 3 course first </li>
<li>Do you have your own device? Learners on this course would benefit from having a laptop or PC to practice on. </li>
<li>Do you have your own e-mail account? Learners suitably for this course will definitely have an individual e-mail address. </li>
<li>Do you know the formulae for an average? A key difference between this and the Entry 3 course is the use of the spreadsheet Excel to do calculations.  </li>
<li>Do you bank online? Learners with this level of competence should probably be directed to the bLevel 1 course. </li>
<li>Do you have any previous experience using computers at work? Learners suited to this course are likely to use computers regularly in their working life. </li>

Materials and costs

<p>The course will be taught in an IT classroom but learners can bring their own devices to work on if they wish.</p>

<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
