What the course is about

<p>This the third course in our programme. Learners should take IT for Beginners A and IT for Beginners B before taking this examined course.</p>

<p>The course will cover (1) Using devices and handling information (2) Creating and editing (3) Communicating (4) Transacting e.g. buying things on line and completing forms online (5) Being safe and responsible online.</p>

<p>Details of this course: </p>

<p>1 - Using devices and handling information </p>

<ul>
<li>Know differences between desktop, laptop and smart devices </li>
<li>Know about e-mail, word-processing, presenting </li>
<li>Change settings like display, sound, Wi-Fi, time, language, accessibility </li>
<li>Files – create, open, edit and save  </li>
</ul>

<p>2 – Creating and editing </p>

<ul>
<li>Create and format text e.g. bold, underline, italics, font sizes,  text alignment, bulleted lists </li>
<li>Edit and format pictures </li>
<li>Capture images and video </li>
</ul>

<p>3 Communicating </p>

<ul>
<li>Send e-mails </li>
<li>Make video calls </li>
<li>Understand how you create a digital footprint </li>
</ul>

<p>4 Transacting </p>

<ul>
<li>Fill in an online form </li>
<li>Buy something online </li>
</ul>

<p>5 Being safe and responsible online </p>

<ul>
<li>Know how to use two factor authentication when logging in </li>
<li>Understand security software </li>
</ul>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>We do run courses called ICT for Beginners A and ICT for Beginners B and it would be helpful to do these first before choosing this course.</p>

<p>There are no other  entry requirements for this course other than an enthusiasm for learning about the digital and computing world.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>The course will have an externally set and marked onscreen / online assessment which will be available on demand.</p>

<p>The assessments will be pass / fail in line with the other Functional Skills qualifications.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This an entry level course suitable as a first qualification course for those who have done our two ICT for Beginners courses.</p>

<p>Key questions for potential learners to consider might be: </p>

<ol>
<li>Have you done a previous course with Skills and Learning? Learners may well have completed our IT for Beginners course. </li>
<li>Do you have any previous experience of using computers? Learners suited to this course will have some experience of using computers but are unlikley to hold formal qualifications in ICT.</li>
<li>Do you have your own device? Learners are likely to have a digital device such as a tablet, laptop or PC. </li>
<li>Do you have your own e-mail account? Learners suited to this course are likely to already have an e-mail account</li>
<li>Do you bank online? Learners suited to this course may or may not use online banking already.</li>
</ol>

Materials and costs

<p>The course will be taught in an IT classroom but learners can bring their own devices to work on if they wish.</p>

<p>This is a good course but is 19 weeks long and so learners need to show a degree of commitment. </p>

<p>Learners will need to take the exam at the end of the course and that is what generates the funding for us.</p>

<strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.<br />
<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
