What the course is about

<p>During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about basic sewing and sewing machine skills as well as hemming and mending clothes.</p>

<p>Topics that may be covered include:</p>

<ul>
<li>Sewing machine basics - tension, needles & stitch adjustment</li>
<li>Different hemming techniques (by hand and machine)</li>
<li>Patching and darning (by hand and machine)</li>
<li>Recycling old items and becoming more sustainable                  </li>
</ul>

<p>Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.</p>

<p>Practice at home and completion of project work is advisable to enhance your learning experience.</p>

<p>Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community.  </p>

<p>This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course. </p>

<p>There are no Pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.  </p>

<p>There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This course is for parents, carers or grandparents of a child below the age of 16 yrs</p>

<p>This is a beginner&#039;s course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject, or very basic knowledge of the subject, including some memory of the subject from school.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home.  Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.</p>

<p>You will also need a basic sewing kit and any old clothes you wish to practice on/recycle.  Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session.<br />

During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.</p>

<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
