What the course is about

<p>This course will help learners&#039; understanding of British society.</p>

<p>It will help with understanding issues around working in the UK.</p>

<p>It is  a first step towards British Citizenship because it will help you start thinking about the requirements such as:</p>

<ul>
<li><strong>Life in the UK Test:</strong> You must pass the Life in the UK test.</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li><strong>English Language:</strong> You must demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of English.</li>
</ul>

<p>Please note, however, that whilst this is helpful preparation for the challenges to come in achieving citizenship, it is NOT a formal part of the Citizenship requirements.</p>

<p>Learners taking this course will end up with a formal qualification in Living and Working in the UK from the Gateway exam board.</p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>There are no entry requirements for this qualification.</p>

<p>Any learner from any country can take this course.</p>

<p>Many learners will be taking an ESOL (Englsih as a Second Langauge) qualification alongside this course.</p>

<p>The extra practice in speaking, reading and writing English here will help learners with their ESOL exams.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>The course is assessed via a portfolio of evidence.</p>

<p>The course tutor will tell you what to do as you go along.</p>

<p>As long as you attend the sessions and carry out the tasks you should succeed on this course.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This course has been developed mainly for learners relatively new to the UK who may also be learning English as an additional language.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>Learners might find it helpful to bring a pen and paper to the course.</p>

<p>It might also be useful to have a mobile phone which leaners can use to translate any words they don&#039;t know.</p>

<p>Learners might also use mobile phones to carry out research for some tasks.</p>

<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
