Living and Working in the UK

This course will help learners' understanding of British society.

It will help with understanding issues around working in the UK.

It is  a first step towards British Citizenship because it will help you start thinking about the requirements such as:

• Life in the UK Test: You must pass the Life in the UK test.

• English Language: You must demonstrate a sufficient knowledge of English.

Please note, however, that whilst this is helpful preparation for the challenges to come in achieving citizenship, it is NOT a formal part of the Citizenship requirements.

Learners taking this course will end up with a formal qualification in Living and Working in the UK from the Gateway exam board.

There are no entry requirements for this qualification.

Any learner from any country can take this course.

Many learners will be taking an ESOL (English as a Second Language) qualification alongside this course.

The extra practice in speaking, reading and writing English here will help learners with their ESOL exams.

The course is assessed via a portfolio of evidence.

The course tutor will tell you what to do as you go along.

As long as you attend the sessions and carry out the tasks you should succeed on this course.

This course has been developed mainly for learners relatively new to the UK who may also be learning English as an additional language.

Learners might find it helpful to bring a pen and paper to the course.

It might also be useful to have a mobile phone which leaners can use to translate any words they don't know.

Learners might also use mobile phones to carry out research for some tasks.

This is a new course for us but is the first step on a series of courses.

If you successfully complete this course, it is likely that we will then have a next step one for you to progress onto.

Attendance: before enrolling you should ensure that you can attend all classes offered as far as possible.
Places on courses: many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills & Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.
Fully funded learners: if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.
Home study: you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.

Proof of identity: please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.
Off-site activities: with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.
