What the course is about
<p>In your class, depending on your level, you will:</p>
<ul>
<li>Revise the basics of maths including how to work with fractions, decimals and percentages</li>
<li>Use metric measures in everyday situations</li>
<li>Learn how to collect and sort numerical information</li>
<li>Work on problem solving skills</li>
<li>Complete classroom and homework activities to prepare you for your assessment</li>
</ul>
<p>You will learn through a variety of activities including tutor demonstration, presentation and guidance, individual and group work, discussion, internet research, films and recordings, reading of various types of text and assignments.</p>
<p>You will be supported to develop good study skills and where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work.</p>
<p>There are regular assessments throughout the course designed to provide feedback on your progress, as well as final exams.</p>
<p>This is an intense course and significant home study will be essential to successfully complete this course. Homework will be set regularly, and you will be expected to complete this to retain your place on the course.</p>

<p>There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the time involved in this course, including the associated home study and the assessed work required, and that you intend to sit the examination. Skills & Learning regularly monitor attendance and progress. <p>Places on this course are funded by the UK Government and failure to attend 90% of the sessions may result in your withdrawal from the course and an Admin Fee of £100. </p>
Assessment of progress, tests, exams
<p>This is an accredited course. You will work towards an exam.</p>
<p>Level 1 and 2 Functional Skills exams are set and marked externally. If successful you will receive a nationally recognised certificate.</p>
<p>With your tutor you will agree goals for you to work on in class and this will be reviewed at regular intervals.</p>
<p>You will negotiate a Personal Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals. Please note that this qualification must be completed within the deadline set.</p>
<p><strong>If you fail to attend an exam, you may be charged an Admin Fee of £100. </strong></p>
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
<p>This course is for you if</p>
<ul>
<li>You want to gain a maths qualification at Functional Skills Levels 1 and 2.</li>
<li>You want to attend a small, friendly class and work at your own pace and level</li>
<li>You want to improve your communication and maths skills for employment and/or personal reasons</li>
<li>You are able to attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions</li>
<li>You have a good level of ICT skills and access to a computer and the internet.</li>
<li>You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in maths to attend this course.</li>
</ul>
<p>IMPORTANT - On this course it is essential that you attend regularly and complete any homework given. Exam entry is dependent upon full attendance and successful completion of practice papers.</p>
<p>Please note that applications can?only be considered from residents living in Dorset and neighbouring counties of Devon, Hampshire, Somerset and Wiltshire. </p>
Materials and costs
<p>You will need A4 paper, a folder, pens, pencils and mathematical equipment (scientific calculator, compasses, ruler and protractor) available at each session. </p>
<p>You will require access to a computer and the internet. We will give you access to Microsoft Teams where we will upload learning material and support documentation which you will need to refer to frequently throughout your course. If you do not have access to a PC at home you can use facilities at your local library. </p>
