What the course is about

<p>Welcome to Maths!  This course will help support you in achieving an accreditation, either on this course or on another of our popular Maths courses once space becomes available. We try to transfer you to a mainstream course within 6 weeks of starting this Welcome course.</p>

<li>Allowing for flexible accreditation (exam) opportunities to be provided (including E3 – L2 FS qualifications or NCFE qualifications)</li>
<li>Begining to build your confidence and self-esteem, both in the subject and in your general learning skills</li>
<li>Allowing you the opportunity for transfer to other courses<em>(depending on available places)</em></li>
</ol>

<p><strong>In your class, depending on your level, you will:</strong></p>

<ul>
<li>Work on the basics of Maths including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, and using multiplication tables</li>
<li>Start to use metric measures in everyday situations</li>
<li>Learn how to use tables and graphs</li>
<li>Work on problem solving skills</li>
</ul>

<p>You will learn through a variety of activities including tutor demonstration, presentation and guidance, individual and group work, discussion, internet research, films and recordings, reading of various types of text and assignments.</p>

<p>You will be supported to develop good study skills and where relevant, your learning will enable you to develop skills and knowledge required for work.</p>

<p>This is a fun course that will help you challenge yourself and significant home study will be essential to successfully complete this course.</p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>A basic application needs to be completed in order to enrol on this course.</p>

<p>There is an expectation that if you enrol on this course, you are willing to commit fully to the time involved in this course, the associated home study and the assessed work required.</p>

<p><strong>Places on this course are funded by the UK Government and failure to attend 90% of the sessions may result in your withdrawal from the course and an Admin Fee of £100.</strong></p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>You will negotiate a Learning Plan with your tutor identifying the areas you need to develop; this will be reviewed at regular intervals.</p>

<p>Depending on your personal situation, you may be entered for an accriditation. Please note that any accreditations must be completed within the deadline set.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This course is for you if</p>

<ul>
<li>You want to attend a small, friendly class and work at your own pace and level</li>
<li>You want to complete a thorough initial assessment in order to find out which level course is best for you to study on</li>
<li>You want to improve your maths skills for employment and/or personal reasons</li>
<li>You are able to attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions</li>
<li>You have a reasonably good level of ICT skills and access to a computer and the internet.</li>
</ul>

<p>You do not need any previous experience or qualifications in Maths to attend this course.<strong> IMPORTANT - On this course it is essential that you attend regularly and complete any homework given.</strong></p>

<p>Please note that applications can only be considered from residents living in Dorset and neighbouring counties of Devon, Hampshire, Somerset and Wiltshire.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need A4 paper, a folder, pens, pencils and highlighter pens available at each session.</p>

<p>You will require access to a computer and the internet. We will give you access to Microsoft Teams where we will upload learning material and support documentation which you will need to refer to frequently throughout your course. If you do not have access to a PC at home you can use facilities at your local library.</p>

<p>For online courses, a desktop or laptop with working microphone and camera will be required and you will need to have your camera on.</p>

<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
