What the course is about

<p>This course starts at a basic level, building up week by week and at a suitable pace for the group. The three main areas of practice and development are:</p>

<ul>
<li>Recognition of the basic to the more complex lip formations of the words we speak</li>
<li>Investigation of the ways to aid understanding speech while in groups, using positional tactics</li>
<li>Using information on technological improvements for people with hearing loss.</li>
</ul>

<p>This course offers you the chance to get to know how to communicate using the skill of lip reading, thus increasing your inclusion in the community and keeping you in touch with friends old and new. All our courses are made up of elements of speaking & listening, reading and writing, and you will work using these elements throughout the course. Some of the skills you gain on this course could help increase your opportunities for employment or working within the community. Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people. Practice at home and completion of homework is advisable to enhance your learning experience.</p>

<p>This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.</p>

<p>There are no pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. Please ensure you have read and understood our STEPS guidance in order to accurately enrol upon the correct level course for you.</p>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>Your tutor will work with you to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This is a Beginners Step 1 course, and you will be expected to have no experience in the subject or very basic knowledge of the subject.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>You will need a notebook, pen and A4 folder. During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.</p>

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
