What the course is about
<p>During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sewing Machine Skills.<br />
<br />
This course follows on from Step 1 (or equivalent) and will help you maintain the skills and knowledge you have already learnt, whilst also introducing some new elements and activities. <br />
<br />
Topics that may be covered are:<br />

<ul>
<li>Operate and maintain a sewing machine safely.</li>
<li>Understand how to troubleshoot problems, including tension</li>
<li>Use pressing techniques to achieve a quality finish to sewn items.</li>
<li>Use a greater variety of the machine stitches & techniques.</li>
<li>Choose a greater range of fabrics suitable for beginner projects.</li>
</ul>

There will be opportunity to choose a practical project to be completed from the selection offered by the tutor. Projects are chosen to give you the chance to put into practice the skills and knowledge that you will be taught during this course. <br />
<br />
You will have the option to adapt choices made to suit your ability and any opportunity you may have to carry out additional work on your project. <br />
<br />
This course can help you to cut your costs and by recycling and renewing, make the most of your existing wardrobe and furnishings making a contribution to a greener environment and helping you financially.<br />
<br />
This course offers an avenue for creative pursuits, improving your health and wellbeing. <br />
<br />
Classes are small, friendly, and informal, offering plenty of individual support and a chance to meet others who share your interest in sewing.<br />
<br />
This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.</p>

<p>There are no Pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course. </p>
Assessment of progress, tests, exams
<p>Your tutor will work with you to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course. </p>
<p>There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.</p>
Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
<p>This is a Step 2 course, and you will be expected to have knowledge and experience in the subject and can understand and complete simple tasks in the subject. As a guide, please review the Step 1 course information sheet. </p>
Materials and costs
<p>You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home. Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.</p>
<p>You will need a basic sewing kit. Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session. </p>
<p>Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor. You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses. </p>
<p>You will need to provide the materials for the project item that you choose to make.</p>
<p>You may find a notebook and pen useful</p>
<p>During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.</p>

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
