Sewing Machine Skills: Step 1

<p>During this course you will receive both group and individual support in order to help you learn more about Sewing Machine Skills.</p>

<p>This course will start at the very beginning by looking at the basics of how a sewing machine works and help you to gain confidence operating a sewing machine successfully. </p>

<p>Topics that may be covered include:</p>

<p>•    Identifying the parts of a sewing machine <br />
•    Threading & using the bobbin <br />
•    Operating a sewing machine safely – including trouble shooting <br />
•    Use guides on the machine to determine stitching position <br />
•    Change stitch settings for seams and hems<br />
•    Experiment on different fabrics with your machine.<br />
•    Build up a range of stitched samples as a reference for the future.</p>

<p>There will be an opportunity to choose a practical project to be completed from the selection offered by the tutor. Projects are chosen to give you the chance to put into practice the skills and knowledge that you will be taught during the course.</p>

<p>This course offers an avenue for creative pursuits, improving your health and wellbeing.</p>

<p>Learning takes place in a friendly classroom setting, which is a great place for social interaction and helping you meet new people.</p>

<p>This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole course.</p>

<p>There are no Pre-course information sessions or interviews in order to enrol on this course.</p>

<p>Your tutor will work with you to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) which will help you review your progress towards achieving your goals during the course.  </p>

<p>There is no qualification or examination attached to this course.</p>

<p>This is a Step 1 course, it is for complete beginners, people who may need to refresh their skills, if they have not used their machine for a long time or maybe have never used it.</p>

<p>You will need to bring your own sewing machine as this will help you understand how it works and enable you to successfully continue sewing at home.  Please ensure it is in safe, good working condition and bring your user manual.</p>

<p>You will also need a basic sewing kit.  Advice about appropriate choices will be given during the first session.</p>

<p>Before buying expensive materials and equipment please discuss their purchase with your tutor.  You will be expected to purchase your own materials as the course progresses.</p>

<p>You will need to provide the materials for the project item that you choose to make.</p>

<p>You may find a notebook and pen helpful.</p>

<p>During the first session your tutor may discuss additional materials to bring if possible.</p>

<strong>Places on courses:</strong> many of our courses are in high demand. If you have been offered a place but no longer require it, please advise us immediately as you may be preventing another learner from taking the place. Where learners do not attend the first session, without having given prior notice, Skills &amp; Learning reserve the right to offer the place on the course to another learner; you will not be eligible for a refund it it is outside of the terms outlined in our cancellation policy.<br />
<strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. We reserve the right to withdraw future offers of fully funded places if you regularly do not start or complete funded courses.<br />
<strong>Home study:</strong> you will&nbsp;be required to do significant&nbsp;study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />
<strong>Qualification Levels:</strong> there is further information about qualification levels on our website.<br />
<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
