What the course is about

This course introduces you to the essential skills and techniques used in needle and textile crafts, helping you build confidence through simple, guided projects. You’ll learn how to select the right fabrics, threads, and tools for different tasks, as well as how to thread needles, apply basic stitches, measure and mark materials, and handle textile equipment safely. Whether you’re repairing, upcycling, or creating something new, the course gives you a strong foundation in practical skills that you can use at home or in future craft projects.

Throughout the course, you will have the chance to explore your creativity, develop your own ideas, and work at a pace that suits you. You’ll also learn how to review your finished work, identify what went well, and recognise areas for improvement. With friendly guidance and plenty of hands on practice, this course supports not just skill development but also wellbeing, self expression, and confidence in your own making abilities.

This course is subsidised by Government funding so you should aim to attend the whole workshop.

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

This course is ideal for anyone who enjoys being creative with fabrics and wants to build confidence in basic needle and textile craft skills. It is designed for beginners who may be new to sewing or textile work, as well as those who want to refresh their skills and explore simple, guided projects.

To get the most out of the course, you must already be able to thread your own sewing machine and use it independently, as this will allow you to focus on developing your stitching techniques, handling fabrics safely, and completing your craft tasks with confidence. Whether you’re interested in repairing, upcycling, or creating your own textile pieces, this course offers a supportive and enjoyable space to develop your abilities.

Materials and costs

You will need to bring your own sewing machine to the course, as working with your own equipment will help you understand how it operates and allow you to continue sewing confidently at home. Please make sure your machine is in safe, good working condition and remember to bring the user manual.

You will also need a basic sewing kit, and your tutor will give guidance during the first session on what items are most suitable. Before purchasing any expensive materials or tools, please speak with your tutor for advice. As the course progresses, you will be expected to buy your own materials for the projects you choose to make.

You will need to provide the fabric and materials for your chosen project item. A notebook and pen may also be useful for recording techniques, ideas, and feedback.

During the first session, your tutor may discuss any additional materials that would be helpful to bring if you have them available.
