What is this course about?

This 12 week accredited course will prepare you to take the Maths Level 1 Functional Skills exam. In addition to consolidating your prior knowledge of ratios, proportions, fractions, decimals and percentages you will also use statistical methods to investigate situations and draw mathematical conclusions.

Who is this course for?

This course is for adult learners who need to develop Maths skills for confidence in daily life, work or further study.

Are there any entry requirements?

You must be aged 19 or older by the 31st of August 2024. You will start by completing Maths and English assessments. The Maths assessment will need to identify gaps at Level 1. If you have a recent Entry 3 Functional Skills Maths qualification, we will still need to look at your Maths assessment results. Please note that you should have, or be working towards, Level 1 in English language skills for the Maths problem solving skills at this level.

Do I need to have an interview before I can enrol?

Yes. There will be an online or face to face interview with a tutor where you will complete short maths exercises and discuss if the course will meet your needs. If the course is not suitable, the tutor will advise you on a more suitable course to apply for.

How will I be taught?

The course will be taught as 'hybrid', meaning you will be able to access the timetabled sessions in class at HALS or online, depending on what suits your learning style. How you will access the course should be agreed in advance with your tutor. For all learners, the course will consist of input sessions, group tutorials, independent exercises, group tasks and quizzes as set by your tutor. The online classroom will be taught using MS Teams for Education and you will be given support to access your free learner account before starting your course.

What feedback will I get?

You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made. You will decide individual learning goals with your tutor and see your progress over the term by keeping a folder of work and using the BKSB platform.

How will I be able to give my views on the course?

You will be able to talk to your tutor in one to one meetings about your learning during tutorials. Your tutor will ask for your feedback as a group at different times during the session and in course reviews. You will be able to formally record your views on the course at the end by completing an evaluation form. You may also complete GLA & OFSTED surveys.

What course can I do next?

You will be able to discuss progression options with us, including Level 2 Maths courses, volunteering and other opportunities.

Additional information

It is important for you to access every class in order to gain the support to achieve the qualification. If you are unable to attend a specific class please let your tutor know in advance. If you do not access your learning during the first week of the course or you miss 2 classes in a row you may lose your place on the course.

Assessment Method

There is an Initial and Diagnostic assessment before the course and progress checks during the course. There will be mock exams towards the end of the course and a final assessment at HALS in Wood Green Library before the course end date. Exam results from the final assessment are 4-6 weeks from the date of the exam.

Equipment Required

You should bring pens, pencils, drawing equipment and a folder or notebook to every class. Use of the internet will be important to support your independent study. If you do not have a device or good internet connection, you may be able to organise to use the study facilities at HALS at Wood Green Library. Please speak to your tutor if you do not have a smartphone, tablet or laptop with internet.
