British Sign Language - Level 1

<ul>
<li>The Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (BSL) introduces learners to basic communication skills in BSL for everyday situations.</li>
<li>Designed for anyone who wants to communicate with Deaf people using simple, everyday BSL vocabulary, phrases and sentences.</li>
<li>Provides foundational skills in both BSL production (signing) and reception (understanding).</li>

<ul>
<li>You must be aged 19 or over.</li>
<li>An initial assessment will ensure you join the right level.</li>
<li>Suitable for complete beginners with no prior BSL experience needed.</li>
<li>Learners must have sufficient vision, manual dexterity and facial/body movement to produce and receive BSL.</li>
<li>Regular attendance and independent practice recommended.</li>
</ul>

<li>Develops practical skills for communicating with Deaf people in daily life, community settings and workplaces.</li>
<li>Builds confidence in using a visually rich and expressive language.</li>
<li>Provides a stepping stone to higher-level BSL qualifications (Level 2, Level 3 and beyond).</li>
<li>Ideal for learners working or volunteering in customer service, education, health and social care, public services, or community environments.</li>
<li>Helps promote inclusion and better understanding of the Deaf community.</li>
</ul>

<li>Through tutor-led demonstrations, guided practice and interactive activities.</li>
<li>Pair and group signing exercises to build confidence.</li>
<li>Real-life scenarios to practise natural communication.</li>
<li>Independent study, including practising signs, revising vocabulary and watching BSL videos</li>

<li>Internally assessed by your tutor and externally verified.</li>
<li>Assessment includes short practical demonstrations and conversations in BSL.</li>
<li>No written exam required—assessment is entirely practical.</li>
</ul>

<li>Course fees may apply, depending on eligibility.</li>
<li>No specialist equipment required.  </li>
<li>You may wish to bring basic stationery.</li>
</ul>
