What the course is about

<p>This short online taster course provides an opportunity to find out more about GCSE Maths. It will give you a chance to decide if GCSE Maths is right for you and provide underpinning knowledge that will help you make a flying start on a full 9-month GCSE qualification course.</p>

<p>Please note: this course does not guarantee you a place on GCSE Maths but it is an excellent starting point to find out more about the course. Please apply separately if you are interested in doing the full GCSE Maths course. </p>

Pre-course information session or interview

<p>You will be required to complete an application form to apply for this course. You will also need to complete a BKSB Maths Initial Assessment if you have not already completed one within the last 6 months. Once you have completed the Initial Assessment we will be in touch to advise you whether you have been successful or to offer you an alternative class.</p>

<p>This course is for you if:</p>

<ul>
<li>You want to attend a small, friendly class and learn more about the full GCSE Maths course</li>
<li>You can attend every week and complete home study tasks between sessions</li>
<li>You are confident with your IT skills and have access to a computer with camera and microphone</li>
</ul>

Assessment of progress, tests, exams

<p>There is no examination associated with this short course. Personal targets will be negotiated and reviewed to help you reach your goals.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications

<p>This short course is ideal for learners who are considering enrolling on a GCSE Maths course starting in September 2024. No previous experience or qualifications are required but you will need to complete a BKSB English initial assessment and demonstrate that you are working at BKSB L1.6 or above.</p>

<p>Knowledge and effective use of standard English language is essential for this course. If English is not your first language you may need to provide proof of an English language qualification at Level 2, for example ESOL Level 2.</p>

Materials and costs

<p>This course is delivered online so you will need access to a reliable internet connection and a computer with camera and microphone. We will provide you with an Office365 account and access to Microsoft Teams to join your online lessons and view uploaded learning materials. If you do not have access to a PC at home, you may be able to borrow a laptop, subject to availability and eligibility. </p>

<p>It is also recommended that you have A4 paper, a folder, pens and pencils. You may wish to purchase a textbook to support your studies (details to be provided by the Tutor). </p>

<p>This course is usually fully funded (no fee) to anyone over 19 who does not already have GCSE English Grade A*-C / 9-4 (subject to residency rules).</p>

Next Step

<p>Once you have completed this short course, you may wish to enrol on the GCSE Maths course, or you may like to consider a Maths or ICT (Information and Communication Technology) qualification.</p>

<strong>Home study:</strong> you may be required to do some study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />
<strong>Qualification Levels:</strong> there is further information about qualification levels on our website. Some courses have learners of different levels being taught in the same class with differentiated learning materials and activities appropriate to the qualification level.<br />
<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
