What the course is about
<p>This is an exciting new course which will help you understand and then re-imagine local history in a creative way.</p>
<p>Learners will achieve the Gateway Level 1 Award in Progression but, more importantly, will make new friends and generate new memories.</p>
<p>The tutor, Alex Blanchard, is a published author ("Wander Women" and host of the podcast "The Grand Thunk").</p>
<p>The course will be hosted at Dorchester Library and at the Dorset County Museum.</p>
<p>Participants will be required to purchase a year's pass to the museum as the artefacts here will be used to help understand local history and as a stimulus to creative writing.</p>

Pre-course information session or interview
<p>The detailed specification of the Gateway Level 1 Award in Progression is given below.</p>
<p>The Local History outcomes are:</p>
<p>1 Know about past history in own local area.</p>
<p>2 Be able to find historical information from a range of different sources.</p>
<p>3 Be able to create and present a record of findings.</p>
<p>4 Understand how knowledge of the past might affect the local community.</p>
<p>The Creative Writing outcomes are:</p>
<p>1 Know the differences between fiction and non-fiction.</p>
<p>2 Be able to use personal experience as a source for creative writing.</p>
<p>3 Be able to use stimuli as a basis for creative writing.</p>
<p>4 Know how to develop work in progress.</p>
<p>5 Know the importance of choosing a particular reading audience.</p>
<p>6 Be able to reflect on work.</p>
Assessment of progress, tests, exams
<p>There are no exams for this course but the portfolio participants will generate will be accredited via the Gateway Level 1 Award in Progression.</p>
<p>We will seek to display the creative writing about local history generated both physically - perhaps in the museum and library - and online via the Skills and Learning website.</p>

Who the course is for / Previous experience, knowledge or qualifications
<p>This course is for anyone with an interest in local history or creative writing.</p>
<p>It is likely to appeal to learners with some developed literacy skills.</p>
Materials and costs
<p>Learners will be expected to purchase an annual pass to the museum as this will be the base for some of the course.</p>
<p>There will be the opportunity to have a 45 minute guided tour of the museum's artefacts for a cost of £8.40 per learner as an addition to the course.</p>

<strong>Fully funded learners:</strong> if you have been offered a fully funded place on a course and no longer require it, you must advise us before the course starts so that your place can be offered to someone else. <strong>Home study:</strong> you will be required to do significant study at home between sessions to assist with your learning and progress.<br />

<strong>Proof of identity:</strong> please bring photographic ID and your National Insurance number with you to your first session. You will also need to provide it for any external examinations you take.<br />
<strong>Off-site activities:</strong> with some courses, there may be the opportunity for off-site enrichment activities at additional cost, for example: gallery, museum or exhibition visits. Where this is an integral part of the course, your tutor will discuss the arrangements with you during your induction.<br />
<strong>Parking at centres:</strong> parking at centres may be limited; please be prepared to use on street parking or pay and display car parks.
