What is this course about?

<p><span style="font-size:10.0pt"><span style="font-family:&#34;Calibri&#34;,sans-serif">By the end of this course students should be able to safely sew a garment to a good standard using tools and materials correctly.  A range of skills will be covered from correctly threading a sewing machine, hand stitching, how to read and use a shop purchased pattern.  A sewing machine will not be needed for the first session.  </span></span></p>

Who is the course for?

<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><span style="font-family:&#34;Calibri&#34;,sans-serif">This course is aimed towards those who have some knowledge of sewing but are looking to extend their knowledge and confidently be able to make garments that fit and of a high quality. </span></span></p>

Any previous experience/qualifications you need to do the course

<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><span style="font-family:&#34;Calibri&#34;,sans-serif">Students should have a good level of written and spoken English. </span></span></p>

What you need to bring with you

<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><span style="font-family:&#34;Calibri&#34;,sans-serif">A working sewing machine, budget to purchase materials for the creation of a garment plus an hour per week to complete homework.     </span></span></p>

How you will be assessed

<p><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">As this is an exam course the content it set by awarding body and includes:</span></span></p>

<ul>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Setting up a sewing machine correctly</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Health and safety whilst sewing </span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Hand stitching </span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Selecting the correct tools and materials for garment construction</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Using an over locker (Step2Skills have two overlockers for students to use in the session)</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-size:11pt"><span style="font-family:Calibri,sans-serif">Constructing a garment (suggested garment is simply blouse/shirt). Students will have to supply their own pattern, fabric and any other items required by the pattern. </span></span></li>
</ul>

<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt"><span style="font-family:&#34;Calibri&#34;,sans-serif">Notes: Choose an ‘easy to sew’ pattern and avoid those which tend to be more complex such as Vogue. Try to avoid difficult to sew fabrics such as sheer or very light weight, those with stretch or designs that require matching e.g. check. </span></span></p>
