Who this course is for

This 2-term course will enable Level 1 and Level 2 learners to develop confidence to solve mathematical problems.

Learners will improve their mathematical skills and demonstrate the ability to apply mathematical thinking to solve problems successfully in the workplace, in the home and in other real-life situations.

At the end of the course, if learners pass a mock exam paper, they will have the opportunity to sit a nationally recognised qualification in Functional Skills Mathematics at either Level 1 or Level 2.

The course is delivered either once or twice per week.

What you will learn

By the end of the course learners will be able to:

Work confidently with percentages, for example, calculate a 25% sale price reduction in an item that normally costs £75, apply a wage increase of 5% to an existing salary of £23,500 and calculate the original cost of an item now costing £150 before VAT at 20% had been applied.

Work confidently with measures, for example, calculate the perimeter and area of 110 metre by 75 metre football pitch, calculate the circumference and area of a circular pond that has a 10 metre diameter and determine the density of a cylindrical metal ingot given its diameter, length and weight.

Work confidently with data, statistics and probabilities (examples) to draw a pie chart given tabulated survey information about people’s pet preferences, calculate the mean, range, median and modal salary of a group of 10 employees and calculate the probability of your ticket winning a prize when there are 15 prizes and 120 tickets have been sold.

Note: level 2 outcomes written in bold italics.

Learners will be expected to confidently and consistently demonstrate these outcomes, and others, by the end of the course.
