Description

An intensive yet relaxed summer school for watercolour painters of all abilities looking to develop their skills.

What can students expect?

The Summer School provides a strong introduction to watercolour for beginners and a valuable refresher for those with some experience. You can follow the tutor’s chosen subject or work from your own reference image linked to the course theme, shared in advance.

Sessions include step-by-step demonstrations and individual support, helping you develop your own paintings while exploring key watercolour techniques in a relaxed, creative environment.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, however it is recommended you join by the second session to make the most of the course.

Previous experience required?

No.

What is the progression route?

Learners can enrol on Saturday workshops or enrol on the “Watercolours-Intermediates”, “Watercolours-Advanced” or “Watercolours-Mixed Ability” courses at Stoke Lodge.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes, learners provide their own materials and equipment.

Work set between sessions?

Optional.

What should students bring?

<li>Palette</li>
<li>Watercolour brushes </li>
<li>Watercolour paper (Cold Press (NOT) 300g/m² - 140lb recommended). Watercolour paper to be stretched on wooden board, with reference picture already transferred/sketched on it and ready to paint.</li>

Instructions for stretching paper

Use a wooden or MDF board (A3 or A2)

Soak paper with a sponge or in cold water (5–10 mins)

Lay flat and tape edges with gummed brown tape

Let dry completely (overnight if possible)

Teaching method/style?

Formal teaching and demonstrations in a supportive environment. Throughout the sessions, learners receive one-to-one tutor support, regular learning checks, guidance, and feedback. Additionally, learners have the opportunity to benefit from their peers' work.

Course Cancellations and Refunds

If we cancel your course

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
</ul>

Refund processing

<ul>
<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>
</ul>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
