Description

This 6-week course is the perfect introduction to weaving. It builds a strong foundation in hand-weaving on a rigid heddle loom and covers the stages involved in the process of making your cotton fabric that can be turned into place mats or a table runner…or another item of your choice with advice from the tutor.

This course will be delivered at St Paul’s Learning Centre.

What can students expect?

You will learn how to warp, wind and thread up a rigid heddle loom, hem stitch your creation and finish your fabric so that it can be used long into the future. We will cover why tension is one of the most important parts of weaving and the difference between a warp and a weft. This is a great introduction to weaving and a perfect starting point for creating your own fabrics in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, learners can join up to week 3, however this means they will produce less fabric but still learn all the technical skills. The tutor also offers the option of borrowing a loom for home practice (upon payment of a refundable deposit directly to the tutor) so learners may catch up on missed sessions and reinforce their skills.

Previous experience required?

No.

What is the progression route?

Returning learners or those with equivalent experience can then do level 2 where the course uses lambswool (or an appropriate alternative) to create their own scarf. There is the introduction of further techniques to explore more complex patterning using supplied equipment as well as design skills to help learners learn to use colour and texture in their weaving.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own yarn. The tutor will advise on what to buy before the start of the course.

Work set between sessions?

No. Unless learners opt to borrow a loom, however this is not a requirement.

What should students bring?

Yarn from recommended supplier

Comfy shoes (there is a bit of walking as part of the set-up process)

A notebook or phone to make personal notes

Glasses if worn for reading
