Curious about the language of Plato, Aristotle and ancient drama? This course offers a gentle introduction to Ancient Greek for learners with no prior knowledge. As well as learning the foundations of the language, you will explore how Ancient Greek continues to shape many modern languages through its influence on vocabulary, word origins and meanings.

What can students expect?

Over the course, you will learn the Greek alphabet, build a basic vocabulary, and explore the core structures of the language, including simple nouns and verbs. Through guided exercises and supported reading, you will begin to understand how Ancient Greek works and develop the skills to read and translate short, adapted passages.

Alongside language learning, the course will introduce aspects of ancient Greek culture and literature, bringing the language to life and providing insight into its lasting influence on modern thought and language. 

A particular focus will be the study of etymology (the origins and development of words). You will discover how Ancient Greek has shaped the vocabulary of English and many other modern languages, especially in fields such as science, medicine, philosophy, politics and the arts.

By exploring the roots, prefixes and suffixes found in Ancient Greek, learners will gain a deeper understanding of how words are formed and how meanings have evolved over time. For example, many familiar words such as democracy, philosophy, geography, telephone and biology can be traced directly to Ancient Greek. Understanding these connections can enrich your vocabulary, improve language-learning skills and reveal the enduring legacy of Ancient Greek in everyday life.

The course is interactive and supportive, combining explanation, practice and discussion. It is ideal for anyone interested in languages, history, philosophy, literature, word origins, or simply trying something new.

Work set between sessions?

Yes. Short homework exercises will be set every week, in order to enable learners to reinforce what they have learned during the sessions.

What should students bring?

A4 or A5 exercise book; pen or pencil.

Teaching method/style?

The course consists of tutor presentation and explanation, grammar instructions, grammar and vocabulary exercises and basic translation with a high level of student interaction and participation, individual, pair and group work
