Description

Dive deep into the Chinese language, history and culture with a multifaceted exploration of the origins, evolution and modern usage of Mandarin. This beginner course offers a firm foundation for future study of Mandarin, for learners with no prior knowledge, as well as serving as a stand-alone course which will introduce you to the rudiments of Chinese language and culture.

What can students expect?

Over the course, you will study fundamental Chinese characters in their cultural and historical context, practise writing them in the traditional calligraphic style using a brush and ink, and develop basic speaking and listening skills. Through guided exercises and supported reading, you will begin to understand the internal logic of the language not only in terms of grammar, syntax, and pronunciation but also in terms of the constitution and evolution of Chinese characters themselves.

In tandem with language learning, the course will also explore aspects of both ancient and modern Chinese history, culture and literature in depth, opening a window into the intellectual and philosophical landscape of the great poets, authors, artists, heroes and mystics who are all too often unheard of in the western world.

The course is interactive and supportive, combining explanation, practice, and discussion. It is ideal for anyone interested in languages, history, philosophy, or simply trying something new.

By the end of the course, you will be able to

<li>read basic sentences in pinyin</li>
<li>understand the Chinese phonetic system</li>
<li>practise correct Mandarin pronunciation and know the difference between the 5 tones.</li>
<li>read and write a selection of the most important Chinese characters</li>
<li>exchange greetings, ask and answer simple and practical questions in the spoken language.</li>

Work set between sessions?

Yes. Short homework exercises will be set every week, in order to enable learners to reinforce what they have learned during the sessions.

What should students bring?

We recommend NOT to buy the materials before the first session. The tutor will give some advice and tips on materials which it might be useful for learners to purchase.

To practice traditional Chinese characters, the following materials are recommended:

<ol>
<li>Brush: A medium-sized brush with a clear point and moderate spring is ideal for practice.</li>
<li>Ink: Reliable bottled black ink is recommended for practice. </li>
<li>Paper: Grid practice paper, water-writing cloth, or semi-sized sheets are suitable for practice. </li>
<li>Desk Setup: A flat surface, good light, water cup, cloth, and a place for drying sheets are essential. </li>
<li>Digital Helper: A Chinese calligraphy generator can be used to test character spacing, vertical composition, and overall mood before writing by hand. </li>
</ol>

These materials and tools will help beginners understand the relationships between the brush, ink and paper which are necessary for mastering Chinese calligraphy.
