Description

A welcoming course that breaks down common myths about oil painting, revealing just how accessible, enjoyable, and rewarding it can be for everyone—from complete beginners to experienced painters.

What can students expect?

Whether you are new to oil painting or looking to build on your existing skills, this course has something for you. If you already have some experience, you will be encouraged to work on projects that interest you—such as portraits, landscapes, or still life. If you are just starting out, you will be guided step by step, with clear demonstrations to support you along the way.

By the end of the course, you will have a stronger understanding of oil painting techniques and a collection of artwork that shows how your skills and confidence have grown.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, however it is recommended you join by the second session to make the most of the course.

Previous experience required?

No, this course is suitable for complete beginners and experienced painters.

What is the progression route?

Learners can re-enrol the following term or enrol on oil painting workshops and courses at Stoke Lodge.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own materials and equipment.

Work set between sessions?

Work is not set between sessions, but practice is encouraged.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Odourless paint thinner (e.g. Zest-It or Sansodor)</li>
<li>Linseed oil, Liquin, or another medium</li>
<li>Bristle brushes (various sizes; filbert shape most useful)</li>
<li>A few soft synthetic brushes (for blending)</li>
<li>A4 or A3 oil painting pad (A3 Seawhite recommended)</li>
<li>Two dippers or small jars</li>
<li>Oil paints, either a set or the following colours: Titanium White, Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Light, Alizarin Crimson, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Viridian Green, Cerulean Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Ivory Black</li>
<li>Palette (tear-off palettes are useful)</li>
<li>Pencil and eraser </li>
<li>Kitchen roll or rags</li>
</ul>

Avoid low-quality paint sets (e.g. Lidl, Aldi, The Works). Recommended beginner ranges: Winton (Winsor & Newton) or Georgian (Daler Rowney).

Teaching method/style?

Demonstrations, exercises and opportunities for both group and individual tuition and feedback.

Course Cancellations and Refunds

If we cancel your course

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
</ul>

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>
</ul>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
