Description

Using open-spine bindings, this course explores book construction, visible sewing and creative adaptation.

What can students expect?

Visible, structural and full of character. When the spine is left open, the binding becomes part of the design, revealing the stitching, sections and construction rather than concealing them. Change the sewing pattern, alter the materials, vary the format, and the appearance of the book changes entirely.

This term explores the creative potential of exposed-spine bindings, from elegant traditional structures to contemporary books where construction itself becomes a defining design feature.

Through practical, hands-on sessions, learners will develop bookbinding skills while working with paper, board, thread and covering materials, discovering how visible sewing and open-spine construction contribute to both the function and appearance of a book. Traditional techniques provide the foundation, with plenty of opportunities to experiment with materials, proportions and design details while creating books that are as engaging from the spine as they are from the cover.

Some weeks you will leave with one beautifully finished book; others you will make several in quick succession depending on the simplicity or complexity of the format. Traditional techniques form the foundation of the course, with plenty of opportunities to experiment, customise and develop your own style.
