Bookbinding 4: Single-Section Bindings

<p><span style="font-size:16px">Simple in structure yet rich in possibility, the single-section book demonstrates how proportion, materials and finish can transform a modest format into something truly refined. Change the covering, alter the scale, vary the details, and the character of the book shifts entirely. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:16px">This term explores the creative potential of single-section books in both soft and hard-bound formats, from understated everyday notebooks to beautifully crafted bound volumes. Through practical, hands-on sessions, learners will develop bookbinding skills while working with paper, board, cloth and covering materials, discovering how thoughtful construction and careful finishing contribute to both the function and appearance of a book. Traditional techniques provide the foundation, with plenty of opportunities to experiment with materials, proportions and design details while creating slim books that are carefully made and beautifully finished. </span></p>

<p><span style="font-size:16px">Some weeks you will leave with one beautifully finished book; others you will make several in quick succession depending on the simplicity or complexity of the format. Traditional techniques form the foundation of the course, with plenty of opportunities to experiment, customise and develop your own style.</span></p>
