Description

Using the pamphlet stitch as a starting point, this course explores book construction, binding techniques and creative adaptation.

What can students expect?

The pamphlet stitch is one of the oldest and most satisfying bindings there is, and it is the one that tends to get people hooked. Deceptively simple, it is also endlessly adaptable; change the cover, the thread, the format or the paper and you have something entirely new. 

This term we explore everything the humble pamphlet can become. 

Through practical, hands-on sessions, you will develop core bookbinding skills while working with paper, card, book cloth, thread and a range of upcycled and found materials. 

Some weeks you will leave with one beautifully finished book; others you will make several in quick succession depending on the simplicity or complexity of the format. 

Traditional techniques form the foundation of the course, with plenty of opportunities to experiment, customise and develop your own style.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, however it is recommended you join by the second session to make the most of the course.

Previous experience required?

No. Suitable for both beginners and those with some experience.

What is the progression route?

Learners can re-enrol the following term to discover a new type of bookbinding.

Are there any extra costs?

No. Fee includes tools and materials.

Work set between sessions?

No, but learners may want to practise or research ideas.

Teaching method/style?

Each stage of the process is demonstrated, with individual support provided as needed, alongside opportunities for discussion and reflection to develop ideas and skills.

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days’ notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
