Description

A creative, hands-on workshop where art meets memory-making and featuring simple yet striking techniques like image transfers and fusible web layering to bring memories to life!

What can students expect?

You will transform meaningful images—such as old photos, maps, poems, lace, or fabric scraps—into a textile composition for framing or display.

The tutor will provide laser copies of your images and demonstrate how to reinforce or transfer them onto fabric using fusible web. You’ll learn to create textured, iron-on surfaces in your chosen colours and receive guidance as your design develops. Once complete, you will fuse the elements together and enhance your piece with stitch and embellishments. Debby will share examples of small mixed media projects—like tags and greeting cards—made with fusible web for inspiration. This workshop is suitable for hand stitching, machine stitching, or even no stitching at all—just using adhesive web to hold everything in place.

No. This workshop is aimed at complete beginners or those looking to extend their composition skills in a new way.

What is the progression route?

Learners can enrol on other Saturday freemotion machine embroidery workshops or weekly creative stitch courses with Debby. Stoke Lodge also offers a range of sewing courses.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Specialist materials will be provided by the tutor. A materials fee of approximately £5 (based on usage) will be charged—please bring cash.

Work set between sessions?

No, but you may wish to join future workshops and bring completed work for feedback and idea development.

What should students bring?

If you are intending to machine stitch (not compulsory as you can hand stitch or glue instead)

<ul>
<li>Sewing machine and accessories (i.e. foot pedal, spare needles, tools, instruction manual, etc.). Please ensure it is in good working order</li>
<li>Threads (white, black, green, blue) and pre-wound bobbins</li>
<li>Freemotion foot (also known as darning or embroidery foot). It does not usually come as standard so you may need to order one for your make of machine</li>
</ul>

In addition:

<ul>
<li>Plain cotton fabric e.g. old sheet</li>
<li>Scissors and sharp embroidery scissors</li>
<li>50cm iron on vilene bondaweb (can be purchased from tutor)</li>
<li>Buttons, ribbon, lace snippets (can be purchased from tutor)</li>
<li>Angelina fibres (can be purchased from tutor)</li>
<li>Tulle net, lace, organza if you have any (tutor can provide)</li>
<li>Scraps of bright fabric, or neutrals depending on your taste</li>
<li>Embroidery hoop 6”- 8” if you have one, or tutor can provide</li>
<li>Notebook, ballpoint pen and pencil</li>
<li>Reading glasses if worn</li>
<li>Lunch</li>

Most important: personal images, scraps, maps, poems, photos. Please photocopy these in advance if you wish to retain the originals.

Cancellations by You

<li>If you cancel 7 days or more before the course start date: Refund issued minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>If you cancel less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: No refund will be issued. </li>
</ul>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>Transfers must be requested at least 7 days before the course start date.</li>
<li>A 10% transfer fee applies.</li>
<li>Transfers due to our cancellation of your original course are free of charge. </li>
</ul>

Illness and Absence

<ul>
<li>No refunds are available for non-attendance due to sickness or ill health. </li>
</ul>

Refunds are returned via the original payment method:

<li>Paid in person at Stoke Lodge - Please bring your payment card to the office. </li>
