Description

With a mixed media approach, you will use printing techniques, silk painting and a range of embroidery stitches to create an unusual set of squares which could be made into a box or an art book or used in your own projects.

What can students expect?

This course takes a creative approach to exploring traditional and contemporary techniques. You will paint and print your own background fabrics. You will explore techniques such as block printing, collograph, monoprint and gelli plates. There will be the opportunity to turn favourite pieces into a box or book. Sessions are designed to stimulate individual creativity and exploration.

This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but it is best to join by week 2 to get the most out of the course.

Previous experience required?

Yes. This class is for intermediate embroiderers. We use basic hand stitches but in contemporary and new ways. If you are new to embroidery, you may want to join the 5-week complete beginners course taking place on Monday mornings.

What is the progression route?

Further creative stitch courses, Saturday freemotion machine embroidery workshops or specialist print and art courses.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. A small charge for specialist materials payable to the tutor. Please bring cash.

Work set between sessions?

No, however, you will probably want to finish things started in the lesson as hand stitch can be slow!

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Basic sewing kit</li>
<li>Stranded embroidery thread in colours you like</li>
<li>Scissors for fabric and paper</li>
<li>Notebook and pen </li>
<li>Plain cotton or linen-several A4 size pieces to paint and print for backgrounds</li>
<li>Silk paints and brush if you have them </li>
<li>Embroidery hoop 6”- 8” if you have one</li>
<li>Double sided sticky tape</li>
<li>Firm cardboard (e.g. back of a sketch pad)</li>
<li>Textured wallpaper samples (if you happen to have any or can pick some up from a DIY store) </li>
</ul>

 

The tutor will bring spares of all for a small charge.

Teaching method/style?

Practical demonstrations, show and tell student encouragement (everyone shares and learns from each other’s experiments in a supportive way).

Equipment Required

See list above. In addition:

<li>Lino cutting tools and lino blocks (if you have them)</li>
<li>Pasta machine for dedication to craft use -if you see one in charity shop! Tutor has several to lend</li>
<li>Gelli plate minimum 5cmx7cm or slightly larger tutor will explain and has some you can borrow</li>
<li>Silicone baking sheet </li>
<li>Non-stick silicone baking paper </li>
</ul>

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

 

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
