Description

An introduction to the basics of hand embroidery. You will explore techniques for sewing on buttons, patching to cover a stain, tear or hole (incl the trendy “visible mending” method). If you just want to have fun playing with colourful thread and embroidering a picture or an initial letter that will be welcome too.

What can students expect?

The course is a gentle introduction into how to choose needles, threads and how to begin a project. Every week, you will learn different techniques. You will have fun trying out coloured threads, decorative running stitches while progressing to some simple embroidery stitches. The tutor will provide scraps and backings, buttons, and ribbons for practice and lots of ideas on how to use your new skills in a creative way. You will make your own needle keeper and pin cushion as part of the course. 

This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but this is a short course, so it is best to join by week 2.

Previous experience required?

No.

What is the progression route?

Further courses in stitching or embroidery at Stoke Lodge. Learners can re-enrol on the next course as the tutor will tailor the content for returning learners.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. A small charge for materials and paints of no more than £5 payable to the tutor. Please bring cash.

Work set between sessions?

No, however, as sewing can be a slow activity, you may need or want to finish things outside of the sessions.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Sewing kit, including scissors, embroidery needles (large eye & sharp point), strong sewing threads e.g. polyester, sewing machine thread and 6 strand embroidery cotton in a few colours you like</li>
<li>Embroidery hoop 6”- 8” if you have one</li>
<li>Ruler</li>
<li>Erasable pen or pencil</li>
<li>Old sheet or cotton plain fabric to practise on</li>
<li>Pins </li>
<li>Notebook and pen</li>
<li>A bag or box to keep everything together</li>
</ul>

If you have any- buttons, ribbons, knitting wool scraps, fabric scraps, felt, however, do not buy anything new.

Teaching method/style?

Practical demonstrations.

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
