Description

A welcoming one-day workshop, ideal as an introduction to freemotion embroidery or for refreshing existing skills, with learners exploring the creative technique of ‘drawing with thread’ under tutor guidance.

What can students expect?

Join our experienced tutor for a creative day exploring layered textile techniques inspired by gardens and the beautiful grounds of Stoke Lodge. You will learn how to create printed fabrics and papers using plant materials, before combining your prints with natural papers, silk fibre paper and optional photocopied images to develop a unique garden-inspired composition.

Working with transparent fabrics, you will discover how to layer and trap elements to create depth, texture and visual interest within your design. Once your sewing machine is set up and you have practised freemotion embroidery techniques, you will add detail and definition through further machine or hand stitching, bringing your composition to life.

Throughout the day, you will gain useful tips and techniques for combining printed surfaces, fabrics, papers and stitch to create a richly textured mixed-media textile piece. Your finished work can be framed as a decorative artwork or used to cover a notebook or journal.

Previous experience required?

No. This workshop is aimed at complete beginners or those looking to extend their sewing skills in a new way.

What is the progression route?

Learners can enrol on other Saturday freemotion embroidery workshops or sewing courses at Stoke Lodge.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Paints, print blocks, silk fibres, tulle or organza, fusible web, fabric scraps and specialist equipment will be provided by the tutor. A materials fee of £5 is payable to the tutor on the day; please bring cash.

Work set between sessions?

No, but learners may wish to join follow-up workshops and bring completed work for feedback and idea development.

What should students bring?

<li>Sewing machine (with foot pedal and accessories) in good working order</li>
<li>Freemotion embroidery foot (darning foot). This is not usually supplied with machines and may need to be purchased separately for your model</li>
<li>Threads: white, black, green, and brown & pre-wound bobbins </li>
<li>2 × A4 pieces of plain cotton fabric</li>
<li>2 × A4 pieces of white felt (optional, can be provided by the tutor)</li>
<li>Scissors</li>
<li>50cm firm interfacing (optional, can be provided by the tutor)</li>
<li>Ribbon and wool scraps</li>
<li>6–8" embroidery hoop (if available)</li>
<li>Notebook and pen/pencil</li>
<li>Reading glasses (if required)</li>
<li>Lunch</li>
</ul>

<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>

Transfers

<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
