Description

A one-day workshop to explore various drawing media, such as pastels and paint, with a live model. Prior experience in life drawing is required.

What can students expect?

You will build on your figure-drawing skills by experimenting with a variety of materials beyond pencil and charcoal, including pastel, chalk, pen, biro, crayon, and paint (watercolours or acrylics). Before each activity, the tutor will demonstrate techniques to guide your exploration. 

You will work from poses lasting 20 to 40 minutes, beginning with a nude model and possibly progressing to draped or clothed poses. While accuracy can be helpful, it won’t be the main focus. Instead, you will concentrate on the expressive qualities of each medium, exploring different types of mark-making.

As always, Bill will encourage you to develop confidence in your own unique artistic “handwriting.”

Previous experience required?

Experience in drawing from life is required for this workshop. However, no previous experience with painting or using pastels is necessary.

What is the progression route?

Other drawing and painting courses, especially Life Drawing.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own materials; in addition, a model fee of £8 is payable in cash to the tutor at the beginning of the first session.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Some sticks of willow charcoal-not charcoal pencils </li>
<li>A few coloured, soft, chalky pastels. The tutor can loan you some if needed</li>
<li>Some watercolours or acrylics: black, white, brown, ochre, and blue. We won't focus on colours </li>
<li>A fine pointed paint brush, a broad brush (15-20mm wide), AND one in-between</li>
<li>A white plate or palette</li>
<li>A2 and A3 white cartridge paper (A2 can be divided into two A3 sheets). About 6 sheets of each</li>
<li>Model fee of £8 in cash</li>
<li>Packed lunch</li>

Hands-on drawing with demonstrations, guidance, and feedback from the tutor.

Equipment Required

Optional extras you might like to bring. They are not essential, but the more the merrier!

<li>2-3 sheets of coloured paper (sugar, pastel, or parcel paper)</li>
<li>A few coloured pencils/crayons; water-soluble ones will be especially useful</li>
<li>A black biro/ball-point pen, gel-pen, or fine “sharpie”/ felt-tip pen</li>
<li>1-2 coloured pens</li>
</ul>

• If you cancel 7 days or more before the course start date: Refund issued minus a 20% administration fee.

• A 10% transfer fee applies.

• Transfers due to our cancellation of your original course are free of charge.
