Description

Enhance your ability to draw or paint faces under the guidance of a skilled portraiture tutor and artist.

What can students expect?

You will draw from a clothed sitter with guidance and feedback from the tutor. Use any drawing medium, including charcoal, pastels, crayons, or even paint if you are a confident painter. Those new to portraiture will learn about the structure of faces and receive a demonstration on how to start drawing one. Those who do not need an introduction may begin their portrait right away.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but late starters will miss the tutor’s introduction.

Previous experience required?

Some previous experience of drawing from observation is recommended.

What is the progression route?

Other art courses involving drawing or painting faces.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners provide their own materials. In addition, there is a model fee of £8 for the workshop to be paid in cash to the tutor at the beginning of the day.

Work set between sessions?

What should students bring?

Those new to portraiture should bring: 

<ul>
<li>A few sheets of A3 white drawing paper or a sketch pad</li>
<li>Pencil, charcoal or graphite stick </li>
<li>Eraser </li>
<li>Masking-tape or drawing clips or bull-dog clips</li>
</ul>

 

People with experience of portrait drawing might like to bring:

<ul>
<li>Coloured soft/chalky pastels </li>
<li>Coloured pencils/crayons</li>
<li>Coloured paper (sugar, pastel or parcel paper)</li>
</ul>

 

If you are going to paint, bring:

<ul>
<li>Brushes</li>
<li>Palette</li>
<li>Water jar</li>
<li>Heavy paper i.e.. at least 300gsm, if you’re going to use water</li>
<li>Useful colours for mixing skin-shades are Burnt Sienna, Raw Sienna, Raw Umber & Orange</li>
</ul>

Drawing boards, standing or table easels are provided.

Teaching method/style?

Through practice, with guidance and feedback from the tutor. You will also benefit from short demonstrations and guidelines on face structure. Additionally, you’ll learn from the work of your fellow learners!

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

 

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
