Description

A 5-week course in drawing figures and faces. We will draw from photographs for 2 sessions and from a clothed model for 3, using pencil mainly. Beginners welcome.

What can students expect?

We will start with basic principles, learning about shapes and proportions of the human body, and the tutor will demonstrate the principles of drawing from observation. Then you will draw some figures, first using photographs: e.g. of dancers, acrobats and athletes. In the second half of the course, you will be drawing from a model wearing plain close-fitting clothes, using the skills you learned in the first two sessions. More time will be spent on drawing figures than faces. Faces will be simplified – we won’t have time for the detail needed for portraiture. So, for example, the turn or tilt of the head will be treated as more important than a particular kind of nose or mouth.

A pencil will be our basic tool, but you may also use charcoal or coloured-pencil if you wish. 

This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge but will move to online delivery if necessary.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but this is a short course, so it is best to join by week 2.

Previous experience required?

No.

What is the progression route?

Other drawing courses, especially Life Drawing.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Model fee of £18 for the course to be paid in cash to the tutor at the first session.

Work set between sessions?

No, but it can be requested.

What should students bring?

Teaching method/style?

There will be instruction and a short demonstration probably in every session, but you will mainly be drawing, receiving feedback and suggestions from the tutor.

Equipment Required

Optional extras: 

If you wish, you may use charcoal, graphite-stick or coloured-pencil. 

Stable internet connection, a tablet or PC and ability to use ZOOM if the course moves online.

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
