Description

Explore various drawing media, including pastel and paint, while drawing from both nude and clothed models.

What can students expect?

You will develop skills in drawing figures, focusing on their shape, proportions, light, and shade, but going beyond just pencil! You will explore various drawing techniques presented by the tutor, including charcoal, pen, biro, pastel, crayon, and paint (watercolours or acrylics). Most activities will be preceded by a short demonstration from the tutor.

In each session, you will create several drawings, with most poses lasting 20-40 minutes. We will always strive to balance accuracy, natural ease in your drawing, and the unique characteristics of each medium.

Late starters allowed?

This is a short course, so it is best to attend in full.

Previous experience required?

Experience in some form of life drawing is required for this course. However, no previous experience with painting or using pastels is necessary.

What is the progression route?

Other drawing and painting courses, especially Life Drawing.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes, learners supply own materials. In addition, a model fee of £20 is payable to the tutor at the start of the first lesson.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Some charcoal sticks of willow charcoal-not charcoal pencils. Geometric blocks of processed charcoal are ok but less forgiving /erasable</li>
<li>A few coloured soft chalky pastels. If you don’t have any, you can borrow some from the tutor</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>2 or 3 sheets of A2 white paper</li>
<li>2 or 3 sheets of coloured paper: e.g. sugar-paper, pastel paper or parcel paper. </li>
</ul>

Hobbycraft sell an A3 Coloured Paper pad for just £2 (online or in the shop)

<ul>
<li>Some watercolour or acrylic paint: black, white, brown, ochre and blue </li>
<li>A fine pointed paint brush, a broad (15-20mm wide) brush, AND one in-between</li>
<li>A white plate or palette</li>
<li>White paper A3 or A2 size suitable for paint</li>
</ul>

Teaching method/style?

Practical/hands-on, with guidance and feedback from the tutor.

Equipment Required

See box 8. In addition, you could bring some of the following if you have them:

<li>A few coloured pencils/crayons</li>
<li>A black biro/ball-point pen, or a fine gel-pen or felt-pen.</li>
<li>A few fine-tipped coloured felt pens. </li>
<li>A fat/chunky graphite stick</li>
<li>Oil pastels </li>
</ul>

Language of Instruction

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

 

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
