Description

Three enjoyable mornings drawing outdoors around Stoke Lodge. A chance to experiment with mixed media: crayon, pastel, charcoal, ink, and maybe even paint. If it rains, we will work indoors using photographs.

What can students expect?

The first session will begin with illustrations of different ways of using and combining various drawing materials. The tutor will also demonstrate alternatives to line drawing to create area, texture and atmosphere. You also will learn or practise how to:

<li>deal with light, shade and proportion</li>
<li>simplify the complexity of foliage</li>
<li>select an interesting and workable view outdoors</li>
</ul>

Drawing-boards and small portable tables are available but please bring your own outdoor chair. If the weather forces us indoors, we will work with photographs provided by the tutor.

Late starters allowed?

This is a short course, so it is best to attend in full.

Previous experience required?

A little experience of drawing from observation, or painting landscape is recommended.

What is the progression route?

Other drawing and painting courses, especially those with scope for mixed media.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes, learners supply own materials.

What should students bring?

To the 1st session, please bring:

<li>A light outdoor chair (i.e. camping, garden)</li>
<li>A2 or A3 white cartridge paper</li>
</ul>

<ul>
<li>Pencil</li>
<li>Charcoal </li>
<li>Eraser</li>
<li>Some pastels and/or coloured pencils</li>
<li>Pencil-sharpener or craft-knife</li>
<li>Sticky-tape, blu-tack or drawing-board clips</li>
<li>Any other drawing materials you may have. See 10. Below for optional materials.</li>
</ul>

Teaching method/style?

Practical with a small amount of demonstration and feedback. Learners will have a choice of view and techniques.

Equipment Required

Additional art materials if you have them:

<ul>
<li>Oil pastels and/or chalky pastels</li>
<li>Coloured paper (brown, beige, grey) is nice to use with pastels</li>
<li>Water-soluble coloured pencils</li>
<li>Conté crayons or wax crayons</li>
<li>A fine black felt-/gel-/fibre-tip pen </li>
<li>Some watercolour or acrylic paint, especially black, white, raw umber and green</li>
</ul>

 

Depending on weather:

<ul>
<li>Sunglasses and/or a sunhat</li>
<li>Insect repellent</li>
</ul>

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

 

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
