Description

A one-day workshop to explore various drawing media, such as pastels and paint, with a live model. Prior experience in life drawing is required.

What can students expect?

You will build on your figure-drawing skills by experimenting with a variety of materials beyond pencil and charcoal, including pastel, chalk, pen, biro, crayon, and paint (watercolours or acrylics). Before each activity, the tutor will demonstrate techniques to guide your exploration. 

You will work from poses lasting 20 to 40 minutes, beginning with a nude model and possibly progressing to draped or clothed poses. While accuracy can be helpful, it won’t be the main focus. Instead, you will concentrate on the expressive qualities of each medium, exploring different types of mark-making.

As always, Bill will encourage you to develop confidence in your own unique artistic “handwriting.”

Previous experience required?

Experience in drawing from life is required for this workshop. However, no previous experience with painting or using pastels is necessary.

What is the progression route?

Other drawing and painting courses, especially “Life Drawing-Mixed Ability” at Stoke Lodge.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own materials and equipment. Fee includes model fee for the day.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Willow charcoal sticks (not charcoal pencils)</li>
<li>A few soft pastels (the tutor can lend some if needed)</li>
<li>Watercolours or acrylics: black, white, brown, ochre, and blue (colour work will be limited)</li>
<li>Three paintbrushes: fine, medium, and broad (15–20mm wide)</li>
<li>A white plate or palette</li>
<li>A2 and A3 white cartridge paper (A2 sheets can be cut into two A3 sheets); approximately 6 sheets of each</li>
<li>Packed lunch</li>
</ul>

Teaching method/style?

Hands-on drawing with demonstrations, guidance, and feedback from the tutor.

Equipment Required

Optional materials (not essential):

<li>2–3 sheets of coloured paper (sugar, pastel, or parcel paper)</li>
<li>A few coloured pencils or crayons (water-soluble ones are particularly useful)</li>
<li>A black biro, gel pen, or fine felt-tip pen</li>
<li>1–2 coloured pens</li>
</ul>

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
</ul>

Refund processing

<ul>
<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>
</ul>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days’ notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
