Description

An oil painting class for all abilities from complete beginners to advanced painters.

What can students expect?

Learners can tailor-make their experience in this class. Those who are experienced painters can select projects to meet their particular interests. The tutor will provide projects covering a wide range of subject matter including portraits, landscapes and still lifes, or you are welcome to bring along your own projects.

For those who are beginners in oil painting, the tutor will provide step-by-step projects to follow including demonstrations along the way. 

All learners will be supported by the tutor to develop your skills and confidence in oil painting. Your tutor, Warren Sealey, has years of experience teaching all levels of artists. He will explain and demonstrate techniques to help you get the most out of the class and really develop your oil painting skills. 

This will be a fun, interesting and friendly class.

 

This course will be delivered at Stoke Lodge but will move online if necessary.

Late starters allowed?

Yes, but this is a short course so it is best to join by week 2.

Previous experience required?

No, this course is suitable for complete beginners and experienced painters.

What is the progression route?

Learners may wish to keep returning to this class to further develop their oil painting skills.

Are there any extra costs?

Yes. Learners supply own materials.

Work set between sessions?

Work is not set between sessions, but practice is encouraged.

What should students bring?

<ul>
<li>Odourless paint thinner such as Zest It or Sansodor</li>
<li>Linseed oil, Liquin or another painting medium</li>
<li>A selection of bristle brushes of various sizes, the filbert shape is the most useful</li>
<li>A couple of softer synthetic brushes are useful for blending as well</li>
<li>An A4 or A3 pad of oil painting paper (I recommend the A3 Seawhite oil painting pad, the one with the purple cover)</li>
<li>Two dippers or small jam jars</li>
<li>Oil colours. You can buy sets with a variety of colours in but if buying separately the colours I use and recommend are:
<ul>
<li>Titanium White</li>
<li>Yellow Ochre</li>
<li>Cadmium Yellow Light</li>
<li>Cadmium Red Light</li>
<li>Alizarin Crimson</li>
<li>Burnt Sienna</li>
<li>Burnt Umber</li>
<li>Viridian Green</li>
<li>Cerulean Blue</li>
<li>Ultramarine Blue</li>
<li>Ivory Black</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>A palette, a pad of tear off paper palettes are handy</li>
<li>A pencil and rubber</li>
<li>Kitchen roll or rags</li>
</ul>

I do not advise buying paint sets from places such as Lidl, Aldi, The Works etc. as they will not be of the quality needed to get the results you will want. If you are not sure what brand to buy for brushes and colours, I recommend the Winton range by Windsor & Newton as a good quality range for beginners. Also, the Georgian range by Daler Rowney.

Teaching method/style?

The tutor will provide personal critiques for students as they work, with demonstrations as appropriate or needed.

Stable internet connection, a PC or tablet and ability to use ZOOM if course moves online.

Refunds and cancellations

<ul>
<li>If we have to cancel your course your fees will be refunded in full. We are unable to reimburse the cost of materials you may have bought for the course.</li>
<li>If you cancel your course booking a week (7 days) or more before the start date we will refund your fees minus an admin charge of 20%.</li>
<li>If you cancel with less than a week (7 days) before the start date or after the course has started, we will not be able to refund your fees.</li>
<li>Transfers will incur a fee of 10% and must be requested 7 days or more before the start of a course unless you are transferring to another course because your original course was cancelled.</li>
<li>We are not able to offer refunds due to sickness or ill health.</li>
</ul>

 

If you are due a refund you must contact the office within 3 months of the course to arrange payment as we do not keep card details.

When attending an online course, it is a learner’s responsibility to ensure they have adequate internet access before the start of a course. Refunds will not be given for technical failure of a learner’s home computer or their internet access.
