Master the skills that turn family history research into real discovery with an insight into social history that shaped our ancestors lives. You will gain a clear understanding of the most widely used family history resources and learn how to apply proven research techniques with accuracy and purpose. By the end, you will know not just where to look—but how to interpret what you find.

The course is designed to meet the needs of family history researchers whatever their level of experience. 

Tutor led direction with talks devoted to areas and subjects that will enhance learners’ knowledge. 

Individual guidance for each learner and easy to follow research techniques undertaken on Ancestry on-line.

What can students expect?

What you will learn:

How to use online genealogical search websites effectively and professionally

How to interpret census records with confidence

How to read and understand parish registers

How to analyse birth, marriage, and death certificates accurately

 

This course will give you the tools to research with clarity, precision, and insight.

Late starters allowed?

It is best if learners start with 1st session, but can join later, provided they already have some experience in family history research. Check with the tutor via the Stoke Lodge office first, before joining the course late

What is the progression route?

Future courses and talks on family history. This course will provide the basic tools and skills needed for self-directed family history research.

Are there any extra costs?

No.

Work set between sessions?

Yes, but it is not compulsory. Learners are offered the opportunity to give a short presentation to the class in the final session about how they undertook their family history research, any obstacles, observations and persons of interest, they encountered.

What should students bring?

Pen, paper and an open mind!

Teaching method/style?

Guided step by step explanations through examples. Powerpoint is used and free access to on-line data bases.

If you cancel

<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>

Transfers

<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
