Description

A basic introductory course, exploring some of the big questions in Philosophy.

What can students expect?

Stimulating discussion about the meaning of life, the fundamental building blocks of the universe, Ethics, Epistemology. Can we know anything at all? Do we live in a Matrix? Does it matter?

The course will introduce key topics from the History of Western Philosophy starting with the pre-Socratic period, Classic Greek Philosophy and Christian Philosophy from Jesus to the Scholastic medieval philosophy of St Thomas Aquinas. We will find out more about wisdom as perceived and presented by great thinkers such as Socrates, Plato and Aristotle. We will look into the theory of how we come to know about the world, or about anything at all. We will also try to understand how these ideas are influencing our society today.

Late starters allowed?

Previous experience required?

No Not at all. You only need to have a sense of wonder, curiosity and desire to know. You do not need previous experience of Philosophy.

What is the progression route?

You can continue with Part 2, then Part 3, then Part 4, then Part 5

Are there any extra costs?

No.

Work set between sessions?

No but learners will be recommended to do some reading or watch some podcasts. This is optional.

What should students bring?

Pen and paper, and an open mind, ready to ask questions.

Teaching method/style?

- Presentation of ideas by the tutor 

- Discussion in small groups; also discussion in larger groups and whole class 

- Listening to selected sections of podcasts

Refund processing

<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>

Transfers

<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
