Description

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">For 11 years England experimented with a range of governments, none of which worked. It is also the height of puritanism and the start of the British empire. We’ve all heard of Oliver Cromwell, but what did he actually do?

What can students expect?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">The 1650’s saw the blossoming of puritanism, the growth of science, the birth of the British empire and the foundation of many of the central tenets of modern Britain, yet it is so often over-looked. It is a really entertaining decade dominated by a range of extraordinary characters and often bizarre events such as the banning of Christmas. England stepped onto the world stage for the first time as trade boomed and the country prospered under Cromwell’s auspices. Then it all went wrong – why? What was the result?

Late starters allowed?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">Yes

Previous experience required?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">No

What is the progression route?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">There will be a follow-on course on Charles II and James II later in the year.

Are there any extra costs?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">No

Work set between sessions?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">No

Teaching method/style?

<span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">I describe my style as ‘informal illustrated lecture’. I am always happy to be interrupted with questions which, hopefully, will lead to interesting digressions. I find that a narrative approach to History is the most accessible for students. History is all about people, and so making them come alive in class is important.
