Description

The story of ancient Egypt’s final – and most splendid – dynasty, culminating in the reign of the famous Queen Cleopatra.

What can students expect?

For three centuries the Ptolemaic dynasty dominated Egypt. They used lavish and ostentatious expenditure to maintain control over an often fragile kingdom at the same time as fending off the growing power of Rome, and also experiencing endless court plots and intrigues. On the one hand they sought to maintain the ancient traditions of Egypt with its deeply-rooted religious beliefs, and on the other they attempted to maintain Egypt’s power in the eastern Mediterranean. Inevitably the last of the Ptolemies – Cleopatra – dominates the final part of the course. Although this is designed as a stand-alone course, the topic follows on directly from the period covered by my courses on ‘Alexander the Great’ and ‘The Successors’. There is no expectation that Learners will have attended either of these courses, but they do follow one another chronologically.

What is the progression route?

I run a range of history courses at Stoke Lodge. This particular course is planned as a stand-alone course, but would also act as the third part of a trilogy after ‘Alexander’ and ‘The Successors’. Learners might also be interested in my ‘History of early Christianity’ course which touches on this period.

I describe my style as ‘informal lecture’. I aim to use pictures wherever possible, and I welcome interruptions, questions and digressions.
