This study of what is arguably the most important period in Western history is an extraordinary tale full of intrigue, bravery, and twists and turns.

What can students expect?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">This five-week course runs through the key events of the two invasions of Greece by the Persians, and how the ancient Greeks united (just!) to defeat them. The story comes down to us from the pen of Herodotus whose entertaining narrative provides the detail needed to retell the fascinating and colourful story populated by a range of intriguing characters. If you know nothing of ancient history this is an ideal introduction to the wonderful world of the ancient Greeks, and if you already know the story come and hear it retold and brought to life again.

Teaching method/style?

<span style="font-family:"Times New Roman",serif"><span style="font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">I describe my style as ‘informal illustrated lecture’. I am always happy to be interrupted with questions which, hopefully, will lead to interesting digressions. I find that a narrative approach to History is the most accessible for students. History is all about people, and so making them come alive in class is important.
