Description

A practical introduction to pattern cutting that will help participants understand garment construction, develop pattern-making skills, and create original designs with confidence.

What can students expect?

This hands-on course will guide you through creating a trouser block tailored to your own measurements. You will learn how to:

<ul>
<li>Take accurate body measurements</li>
<li>Draft a trouser block on tissue paper using your measurements</li>
<li>Convert the block into a trouser pattern by adding seam allowances</li>
<li>Create a toile (prototype) in unbleached calico to test the pattern and assess fit</li>
<li>Make any necessary adjustments to achieve a well-fitting garment</li>
</ul>

By the end of the course, you will have a custom-fitted trouser block and the knowledge and skills to draft, fit, and adapt trouser patterns with confidence. While you will produce a women's trouser block, the techniques and principles taught are transferable to men's clothing.

Late starters allowed?

No. This is a short course, and you may miss key instruction if you do not attend in full.

Previous experience required?

Yes, some sewing experience is necessary, especially when creating the toile. You also need to understand how to use a commercial sewing pattern.

What is the progression route?

Learners can enrol on one of the sewing courses at Stoke Lodge.

Are there any extra costs?

Possibly. The course fee may include materials, the trouser block, and calico for the toile. If you already have a pattern master from a previous Stoke Lodge beginners' course, there will be no additional costs. If you do not have a pattern master, one can be purchased from the tutor at cost price. Please contact Stoke Lodge at least two weeks before the course start date if you need to purchase one.

Work set between sessions?

No, but learners may choose to continue their project at home and may need to complete or further develop their work once the course has finished.

Teaching method/style?

Group instruction, individual support, and practical demonstrations.

<li>Sewing machine, accessories and instruction manual</li>
<li>Usual sewing kit for making the toile</li>
</ul>

Sewing machines are available, but you are welcome to bring your own; if so, please also bring the instruction manual. Please let us know in advance if you need to borrow a machine.

Course Cancellations and Refunds

If we cancel your course

<li>You will receive a full refund of course fees.</li>
<li>We are not responsible for any additional costs, such as materials already purchased.</li>

If you cancel

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: refund minus a 20% administration fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no refund provided.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
</ul>

Refund processing

<ul>
<li>Refunds for online or telephone enrolments will be made via the original payment method within 14 days of approval. </li>
<li>If you enrolled in the office, you will need to come in with your payment card to arrange a refund.</li>
</ul>

Transfers

<ul>
<li>7 days or more before the start date: transfer minus a 10% transfer fee.</li>
<li>Less than 7 days before the start date or after the course has started: no transfer provided.</li>
<li>All transfers are subject to availability.</li>
<li>Transfers between Language levels may be possible with less than 7 days’ notice, subject to availability.</li>
<li>Enrolments are non-transferable. If you are unable to attend, you will not be able to send another person in your place.</li>
<li>If we cancel your course, and you wish to transfer to another course this will be free of charge.</li>
